i said several weeks ago, we are being groomed for scrapping our old cars. phase 1 will be a persuasion plan £1,500 off any new car, what a farce, you can get more than that off for cash. they also had a leading professor stating cattegoracly that scrapping cars is not green. the gov. spokeswoman said old cars are very bad polluters. then the best one yet, they interviewed the chairman of landrover, he was lobbying for several million pounds of tax payer's money to design a more ecconomical range rover, can you beleive that! may be they could up the mpg on it from 12 to 16mpg, wow. with your allowance of £1,500 gov. subsidy for your old polluter you would only need to find £42,000. what is the point of the mot test etc? phase 2 will be a ten year old cut off for old cars to save our plannet and save jobs. herbiemercman.

since when did govt policy have anything to do with sense?
Ok - you drive a wreck. It does 20mpg and burns oil. They will give you £1500 towards a shiny new car.
Now call me daft, but someone who has a car like that has it for one of 2 reasons. Either hes an enthusiast and loves it (and won't scrap it for £15,000 - let alone £1500)... or he's broke, its all he can afford, he can't get finance and couldn't make the payments if he could.
So, who's this intended to appeal to?

Let me guess, "clerical assistants" with 8 year old corsas and fiestas that are worth £500. They scrap these low polluting vehicles with lots of life in them, that would otherwise have gone to teenagers who'd have maintained and loved them for another 4 years, and get some never never lease deal on a new one because in reality even with the deal, they can't afford it. The lease is backed by the govt as the banks won't poppy up and when this person gets made redundant (its only a matter of time), the car gets repo'd and we take the loss. But, at least they've sold a few new peugeots.

Don't they do something like this in Japan? and I heard that Germany is giving big incentives for scrapping older cars - But those countries still have a pretty big Automitive industry

It's not really an incentive, and isn't costing the goverment much. It's still less than the VAT on a £10k car.

As already pointed out most drivers of older cars are either enthusiasts or more likely can't afford anything else.

I was originally going to have replaced mine by now, but with both my wife and myself being made redundant in the run up to Christmas, that's become a big no no.

Jobs are thin on the ground and those that do appear are massively oversubscribed. Perhaps we should blow all of our savings on a new car and then we'd qualify for that £65 per week JSA.
