hello guys,i have just had an oil & filter change on my e280(210) at my local national tyres branch,i was a little worried about using them but found it great value, they use good quality oil(castrol qxr semi synthetic or visco 2000 fully synthetic at extra cost)and new filter for under 30 quid, the fitter had the correct oil filter tool and did a good job..just thought i would let you all know as to buy the oil & filter from the local carspares came to over £30 alone and you still have to do the oilchange yourself!...in my opinion well worth a look if you want a 'in between service' oil change.

IMHO there is no such thing as "good quality" castrol oil, its all recycled, detergent filled wee wee!

Hi Davey. Care to elaborate on that statement? out of curiosity?
I really have no idea but you would think a brand name such as Castrol would be at the "Better" end of the spectrum? Please enlighten us.
Regards Geoff.

Not wishing to anticipate the reply, but I suspect only a fully synthetic oil such as Mobil One will do for our Davey..............
BTW.......EVERYTHING is recycled one way or another.
The only real choices to be made are whether you want to use a fully synthetic, non synthetic or something in between.
As I said before, you get what you pay for.

Castrol is one of those commercial anomalies, the actual product is pretty ropey but a couple of decades of decent marketing has created this brand that people just assume is good.. I'd rather put Halfords own brand oil into my car, it holds its viscosity so much better.. Magnatec is fairly famous for being horrendous at holding its specified viscosity..

Quite interesting, I have always used Castrol Magnetec and seems okay, where do you base your comments on it loosing its viscosity?

What oils do other forum members use?

Good read :)

I personally get my oil from vauxhall as I have a trade account and its £34 for 20 litres (4 bottles in a box) or about 90 quid for 80 litres if I get 4 20 litre drums of 10w40 semisynth.. They are willing to fill up cars with it and give them a 3-5 year warranty it cant be bad :)

Same with coolant really, £21 IIRC for 20 litres.. most places do 5 litres for about £18..
