I am a new user, so a big HI to all of you :D
I am having a problem with my glowplugs/light
My E300 turbodiesel, in key position 2 the glow plug light comes on as normal and car starts as normal, for the past week the glow plug light has been lighting up and staying on for a further minute when the engine is started What dose this normally mean? that they need replacing?
Went out before to try and have a look at them, took the top cover off the engine and looked where the spark plugs for a normal petrol car would be. Are the glow plugs in the same place?
If they are, the diesel rail was going into the hole, and there were 2 other tubes going in/out. if they are the glowplugs i cant figure out how to take them out, coz the metal diesel rail and these 2 other pipes are in the way
Thanks for your help guys

Thanks for the info mate, its a 99' T reg.
Ive been going in through the top, taking the black bit off, but the manifold on the right needs to come off then. Is it hard to remove? Where would the glowplugs be once it is off?
Thanks for your help
here is a pic of my bay:

Just been working on it for the past 4 hours, I got all the screws out at the block, but it is still attached to somthing on the other side. hmmmm, what?! I was about 10 minutes looking for somthing when I put my hand under to feel it. Oh great, theres 5 screws underneath the damn thing, so I think to myself Ill take it down to mercedes, get there and say i need new glowplugs, the guy then tells me......wait for it...... £126 for new plugs and labour!!! and i will have to leave it there on tuesday and pick up on wednesday:evil: What the hell.. 89% of that cost is probably for the labour because its a ****** hard job! I could replace the plugs in my mondeo in less than 10 minutes, mercedes have a shi* design,,, they dont want anybody to touch anything so that they can fix it themselves, so what do they do?! make the ****** manifold so it covers all the important parts!
I bought this car just over a year ago fom a merc dealer in liverpool (mention no names) for £14K 2nd hand with 62K on the clock, I felt like upgrading to a touch of class from an L reg mondao that id had had for 5 years and had no trouble whatsoever! I bought this peice of ***** for £14k and ive probably spent the best part of another £14k in repairs. listed:
1. I go through about 5 bulbs a month. (WHY!! Dose anyone else have this prob?)
2. Turbo went.
3. Rust in wheel arches, boot and bonnet.
4. Alloy paint flaking.
5. New exhaust inc cat.
6. Aircon went completely.
7. Steering column went.
8. New alternator and battery.
And to top that off regular servicing for £290 every 10k.
Its due to be MOT'd next week and thers no way in hell its going to pass i thought.
Whilst I was still in mercedes, after he told me the price for the plugs I asked if I could sell it back. Went out to have a look, looks around it for 2 minutes and says "Just taking it into the workshop" I go inside to wait, he comes back out and says, "Mr X.. we only specialise in cars at 80K miles and below" Tosser!, that was probably his excuse, he probably found somthing bad that was about to go wrong. I just stood up and said "Thanks for your help" and walked out.
This car has been ****ing me about since the week i bought it, and tomorrow i have a cunning plan for revenge. I could sell the car, but nargh! Im gonna pay £130 to get rid of the thing....any guesses?
Yep, im gonna park the car outside the scrappies, place a brick on the accelerator pedal and run the engine to its destruction, so it can feel the same amount of pain its caused me, then its going to be wheeled in to the crusher (Metal cube maker thingy) and listen to the guys at the scrappies tell me how i could sell it for parts. Then at the first sound of creeking metal and the cracking of glass im going to laugh like dracular!
Then im paying the fella to lift this cube in his 1983 Layland lorry (Still runs sweet, unlike my peice of crap thats taking up space in my driveway) and transport it to Mercedes, at which point i will find the same guy in mercedes I was talking to today and ask him to have a look, at whick point there will be a silver looking cube leaking oil and water in a parking spec.
Log on at 6pm tomorrow for pictures of the ordeal.

Glow plugs

Sorry can't help with the glowplugs (I can't even find the battery on my E300TD)!!

However before you crush the car I suggest you try Car Craft on Dinsdale Road, Croft Business Park, Wirral for an alternative quote. (Don't have the phone number but can get it by Wednesday if you need it).

This company has been recently established by a disenchanted ex sales manager & service manager of Liverpools main MB dealer. (They are very helpful unlike my experiences with the main dealer).

However if your still going to crush it.....can I have the right hand mirror first. (£150 for a new one just because the heating circuit doesn't work).

Hi

Sorry to hear of your problems. The inlet manifold isn't hard to remove if you have the tools. All available from you local tools stockist. You may require a ramp to get the bolts off from underneath & its a big pain to get them all on again. Sorry can't agree with you about the design. It works well.

I don't thing I have ever had a turbo fail on a car. Vans yes. Cars no.

There are issues with paint.

Condensor seem to degrade considerabley on E class210 & C class 202's. Replace the condensor & your back in business.

Batteries tend to last 4yrs then die on you. Its very unusual for an alternaotor to go at such a low millage.

Alloys wheels must agree with you there there is an issue. Should try goodwill at you MB garage where you bought it.

If its any help. The CDI engines glow plugs are a lot easier to change. But you need to get them really hot before you replace them as they can seize in the cylinder head.

Regards

Your Mercedes
W210 E320 CDI Estate
Moral of story.....remember with a secondhand Mercedes you are buying someone elses problems. I am sorry to sound unsympathetic, but we have had an E320 CDI since new so you can imagine what might have gone on before you bought the car at 62K...........Not sure what warranty you got with it but my in experience the Merc warranty is worthless.
