Sounds like the control unit has been removed because of a faulty sensor which would cause continuous alarming. There should be a button to cancel the alarm, but it needs to be set every time the car is started, which can be a bit of a nuisance.

It really needs to go on Star to check the system out and identify which sensor is faulty.

If you have just bought the car, you really shouldn't have to do all this - unless, of course it was a private deal! If you want to keep costs down, try to find an Independent Specialist near you to get it checked out.

When it beeps once what comes up on the distance display in the rear do you get just red bars and then it goes blank

Well that sounds like it has a faulty rear sensor but for it not to display anything when going into "d" sounds like you have two faults on the car

I had a similar problem on mine earlier in the year. As above, find a good indie to put it on a STAR. I got my local garage to do it and they told me the faulty sensor - didn't even charge me (though we are on good terms as I always take my car there).

New sensor from Euromerc £25, paint spray from MB £18. All working wonderfully again.

HTH,
Bill

It could well be the control unit best thing to do is get the car stuck on a star machine and get the fault codes read
