Hi Guys

Since 1995 I've owned a 1993 320CE cabriolet, about three months ago the roof failed to retract (the windows rolled down but the hood mechanism did not operate). I messed around a bit with the buttons and succeeded in raising the head rests but they wouldn't then go down again. I put the car in with a local recommended garage run by an ex Mercedes Benz technician. Aften ten weeks and four or five aborted attempts to fix the problem he left the car outside my office at work, gave me the keys and ran off down the road. The roof still does not work and he no longer answers or returns my calls. The local Merc. dealership want to charge £105 plus VAT to look at the car with the rider that "..we no longer have the service books for that car...". I need someone who knows what they're doing and won't charge a fortune, any ideas ?

Thanks for all your replies. Grober - would love to have a go myself but know nothing at all and don't have a clue how to read the fault codes (even after reading your link !). Television - thanks for that - the company that you mentioned will be looking at the car later in the week, fingers crossed !

this job is right up my street, sadly the customer isn't :(. i am in suffolk by the way.

the only good news with these old tops is that they do not need a star machine, in fact the star cannot read the codes on these at all. i use a power probe but you can even do it with just a piece of wire and count the blinks on the hood switch. socket 7 in the 16 pin diagnostic connector from memory.

very often they need the codes erasing before one can make a meaningful diagnosis, but always record the codes as you go. the cause of the fault is most likely a microswitch, or corroded torpedo fuse/s. other possibilities are pump o-rings, bent frames, low voltage, dodgy relays or a myriad of other gremlins including damaged controllers - wonder if that other guy jump started it and then realised his mistake??
