Hello
I have a GLC 250 petrol version. I need help with choosing the correct car battery.
Recently I had to stay out of the country for a couple of months and now I'm back in the UK. Naturally, the car was a nonrunner and the battery has completely died.
I called the breakdown service and the guy managed to jump-start the battery. Although the voltage was at 1v at that time, he said that the battery is still rechargeable. But his advice was to replace the battery as it might cause problems later.
As I have a battery charger (12A fast charger) I tried to recharge it but I'm not able to get it charged at all now (I have a Ring Charge and Diagnose Smart Charger - 12A fast charger. See attached pic)

Can someone please advise me whether I should replace the battery or try charging it again along with a jumpstart (Noco GB20 500A jump starter)?

In case I have to buy a new battery, the OE number for the existing battery is A0009823804.
I'm not sure which battery I should go for since the prices vary a lot between Bosch, Exide, Varta, etc.

When I search using the part number most of the batteries are more than £200 each.
Whereas if I search using 12V, 80ah, 800A, there are quite a lot of batteries in around £100-130 range
I'm very confused as to which one should I buy?

Will Exide EK800 or Varta 580901080D852 fit my car and which one is better?
EK800 is around £108 on Amazon whereas the Varta one is £137.
Are there any other batteries under £130 that are good to buy?

Hello and welcome,

You could take the caps off the cells and top them up (if they’re low) then try and charge again.

MB Grangemouth do forum discount and deliver for ~£5

Tayna batteries website also do some good deals - Varta is a good make. I wouldn’t go near Amazon, ECP or Halfords.

This is the first time I've seen an Exide branded battery being used as OEM by MB which is a good thing, I have long held a healthy respect for the Exide brand, both batteries you have identified are the same spec and fit for the job, you should still however confirm that the physical size is the same as original,

Sometimes a smart charger won't charge a battery if the voltage us too low.
If you have another old school basic charger start it off in that then move to a smart charger.
If you don't have another charger connect another battery in parallel and charge both. Once it gets to a certain point the second battery can be removed.
Smart chargers are sometimes too smart for their own good.

Thank you all for the tips. I tried using a conventional charger (4A standard charger) but it didn't help at all. To be honest it supports vehicles only up to 1.2ltr so can't be angry that it doesn't work. (https://www.screwfix.com/p/maypole-mp7404-4a-compact-battery-charger-12v/360fy)

I'll try to see if I can top-up the battery water and whether it charges after that. Else I'll have to order a new battery altogether.
