I note that Glasses have lowered the prices now that the new Face lift SL is more than one month old, not much sign of the dealers dropping their prices yet. Next month see's the new Reg numbers that should let the prices drop even more more. I think I know of everyone in the UK now that is for sale.

These people probably order the car from the dealer principal at the golf club bar and he sticks everything on it and charges them list price. And they'll think he's a jolly good fellow!

I happen to be a huge fan of the CL500 coupe -to declare my bias I would prefer one to the SL. Rarer, equally stunning to my eye, and room to take a few friends for an electrifying spin. Much easier entry and exit for ladies and to me the most upmarket coupe ever. Might be worth considering.

I mention it here because it is the most amazing value -probably because of fuel prices - when secondhand. It also comes amazingly well equipped. Mercedes main website has a search engine for used Mercs and offers up such morsels as a 2003 CL500 (the full V8 burble, torque and grunt) with only 15,000 miles for a mere £35k or so. Now, folks, this is a £75,000 to £80,000 car when new. Unbelievable. That's over £2 off for every mile travelled -just for depreciation.

AS for having 'every single available extra' well that will be hard to find. And are they really all necessary? Extra weight. More to go wrong. And surely there are some extras where you say, 'Yes it's quite useful, but not worth the money in my view'. I mean if they offered a teasmaid installed and a shoe shiner, together with a hairbrush holder all for a mere £5k extra, would they really be 'must have' items?? I think you said you only do 5000 miles a year so fuel economy is not critical but neither I would have thought are 'air conditioned massaging seats'. These seem to be a rarely chosen extra which will make your search harder by a good margin. Perhaps like me if you find the right car at the right price, with the right mileage, you will shed a few demands for extras. I make a list of essential extras and a second list of those I would like if they happen to be there. Good luck.

Malcom, the withdrawal symptoms are setting in! Waking up dead is not recommended and should be avoided at all costs - particulary if its due to strain caused by excessive SL Hunting.......

If you lived closer I'd lend you my keys and you could release the frustration for a few hours.......
