hi, just bought my first merc.. an '88 190e 2.5 auto! got 185k but motor sounds really nice (when you can actually hear it!). just wanted to know if theres anything i should change/check as a pre-cautionary measure?? also it has a strange knock coming from rear at low speeds.. checked silencer / anything that may be loose underneath but cant find anything.. any ideas? and should these cars handle so 'bouncy'? bit scary round tight corners! thanks in advance.. ronnie. :?:

Hi.

No, the ride shouldn't be bouncy at all. I suggest you check your rear springs and shocks.

The things to check for, would would be the condition of the gearbox oil to start off with. If i was you, id get it changed along with the diff oil just to be on the safe side. Also, being an auto it will be harder on the brakes so check and replace any worn parts.(disks and pads, ect...) Engine and gearbox mounts can wear(causing clunking). Also check the bush's on the propshaft. The rear flexi/doughnut bush is the most likely one to be worn but they also have one just after the gearbox. Check and re grease the driveshaft cv joints as they can dry out over time and miles.

Check for rust around the jacking points. Also the front and rear arches(not usually a problem unless you have the 16v body kit which traps dirt and salt causing the the dreaded tin worm!!!!!! Also, it has been known that they can rust at the bottom of the rear window. This isn't common but it has been known.

I could go on but thats just a few pointers for you to be going on with.

Nice choice BTW and, enjoy 8)

Cheers,

Stu

more questions!!

:?: thanks alot.. i'm afraid i have another problem that occured today, the fuel, oil pres, and temp guages have all stopped working as of this morning! do these have they're own fuse?? any advice would be great..

and as i dont have a manual, i wonder if you could shed some light on the following..

in the boot there is a dial above the n/side shock, which says 'heber' & 'sunken' ( i think) is this some sort of ride height adjuster?

and under bonnet, theres some sort of switch with 's' and 'n' plus some other numbers - near abs unit, is it a summer / winter ignition switch??

thanks again in advance

I just had a look in my manual about the fuses and the only one i can see that might be for these gauges is fuse number 9.

This is the text. Fuse, 8 amp(white) backup lamp, stop lamp, instrument cluster, additional gauges. Its worth checking all the fuses anyway. Even if they look fine they could have dirty contacts, so give them all a few twists to clean any crap off.

As for the dial in the boot. Ive never seen one before TBH. Has your car got the optional, self leveling suspension set up? If so it must be something to do with that. Il enquire further and See if i can get any info for you.

The switch under the bonnet. Yours must be a diesel being 2.5 and i know nowt about em i'm afraid. The petrol's do have a switch in the same location which allows you to switch between the different octane fuels but what it does on a diesel i couldn't say i'm afraid. But i will try and find out for you.

Hi mate, The dial in the boot is for the sunroof. Its for if the motor fails, you can attach a spaner and manualy wind it shut.

hi stu, the sunroof winder is next to it.. i've translated the writing on it from german.. it says 'higher' one direction and 'lower' the other. it sits on top of one of the shocks, it must be a ride height adjuster?? do any 190's have this feature?
the car sits very high (especially the front), i'm gonna wind it all the way down and measure wheel arch height. will let you know.
thanks
