Hi, I’ve jus found this place. I recently changed my Peugeot 3008 1.6hdi for an E220 2016 with the 2143cc engine. 24k Miles.

I absolutely love it, a 1000 times more comfortable than the Peugeot. The pug was a terrible automated manual / semi automatic and clunked only each gear change. The 7 sp full auto in the merc is a dream!

after having the notorious DV55 engine in the Peugeot (very oil sensitive, blows turbos for fun, leaking injector seals and the worst DPF system ever) I can’t help but worry after reading forums, as there are many posts saying that this Mercedes engine has a timing chain issue. I fell in love with the car and kick myself for not researching more thoroughly.

Anybody had this engine and not had a problem? It runs very smooth. Should I be worried?

thanks

Welcome Rick
lovely cars and LOADS of folks have had this OM651 engine problem free or proactively had the chain changed before issues.
You only tend to hear about the problem ones. Listen out for chain clatter first morning start.
Get yourself a good independent Mercedes garage for servicing and get to know them, it will pay dividends!
Plenty NW, depending where you are (in Manchester presumably)

Thanks for the welcomes.

John, thank you for your reassurance; I take the point about only hearing about the problem engines. I see plenty of models with this engine, so they can’t all be bad. I will certainly look to find a good MB independent locally. I’m in Sale, Manchester.

Hi Rick, welcome to the forum and the MB world, I think you have made a great choice. :) French Vs German build qualities are chalk to cheese. Don't worry un-necessarily about the timing chain, there are millions out there running about with out issues, the ones we hear that have problems are very few and far between and are generally due to poor maintenance. The 220 is a bluddy good power unit, perhaps a tad clattery on start up but never the less a bluddy good unit. Don't worry !!! :)

Thanks. Very welcoming on here

Talking of build quality re German vs French, I can now see that there are enormous differences.

Aside from the mechanical issues I had with the Peugeot (I fanatically changed the oil and filter every 5k miles to OEM recommenced oil and), the ride quality was what I would now class as appalling.

Ever pushed an empty supermarket trolley over a supermarket carpark? That is the most accurate way I found of describing the vibrations and noises to the Peugeot dealer and it was pretty much spot on.

The Mercedes floats over bumps in comparison.

Here it is:

It looks a fine car Rick. A Peugeot was never going to stand comparison. You're driving a better car now. Enjoy.

Thanks to all, really appreciate your time in responding.

It’s been a busy week at work so I’ve not been online a lot the past couple of days.

In response to Matthew, thanks - it has plenty of toys to amuse an ex Pug owner, but It doesn’t have the airmatic, distronic etc. It has a driver aware thingy where it tells you to stop for a coffee on long runs, and a red triangle pops up when I am close to other objects (not really explored in detail yet).

my favourite function is the park assist- watching the steering wheel spin all by itself is very satisfying!

heated seats (I think all the mercs do?). I am yet to go through the menus properly and see exactly what is hidden away.

I will look at the independent MB places mentioned above (great help John). I get the impression that most seasoned merc owners use independent Mercedes specialists as opposed to main dealers?

That is something I wouldn’t have known, as obviously there were no specialist Independent Peugeot garages, so after having been ‘rippped off’ once by a small local garage (he cured the effect, not the cause, meaning that the problem persisted after paying £800 for a new DPF that wasn’t needed) and when I took it to the main dealers, I got very lucky with a very knowledgable master technician who sorted the actual Root problem, (leaking injectors causing DPF to block prematurely). The dealers charged Less than the local garage and told me that a) I didn’t need a New DPF at all, B) the garage hadn’t bothered to programme the new DPF to the computer and c) (Unrelated) they had put the wrong oil in!

That one technician at the dealers was fantastic, but the others were useless!

I think that using a Mercedes specialist independent is a great idea, as they will obviously know the cars, but without the chances of having some disinterested junior technician let loose on your prized possession.

Cheers guys
(typing while walking the dog In the rain so apologies for any errors)

Haha, yeah probably more ‘unlucky dog’ as she was waiting for her walk round the block from 10pm (I work from home and get carried away on occasion).
