Thought I'd let those of you who maybe thinking of changing their battery know of my experience today, got stranded last night, took car to get battery check and was informed that it needed replaced ( original 2001 ).
I tried all the usual motor factors, eurocar parts wanted 100 plus vat for a Lion, told him if he threw in a tiger i'd take it, only kidding. Lion was the make of battery. Then tried a few others and prices ranged from 80-90 plus vat.
I built up some courage and phoned the dealer, I was shocked  to hear him say 93 inc vat.
Went straight round and got the merc one, had it fitted at my indie for 15.
So sometimes a call to the stealer pay's.
Happy motoring to all in 2008

Fitted a new one to my w210 yesterday , a motoquip one with 3 yr warranty was £92 inc vat.

Old one seemed fine but it was 6 years old and i have been blowing fuses of late so changed it to be on the safe side

I bought a new battery last year, and the dealers were very competitive, £115 fitted.

Just saying that the battery cannot be responsible for blowing fuses

This would indicate that the pump is possibly faulty or that one of the wire controlling it is touching ground or something like that

My '01 E320 locked it's self in Limp home the other day, check the battery (the orig one) and it was giving 288 rather than 450 - so replaced it.

This made no difference, still locked in 2nd.
Got the car transported to MB, and they have stated to me that it was OK when they got it, and no faults logged.

Could it take a couple of hours of the new battery connected before the falut would be cleared - or was the battery not the problem?

thoughts please

Likewise with Vauxhall, having had two in the family for most of the past 22 years, I've changed half a dozen batteries in them. Dealers were always excellent value, and often the cheapest - last one was in July, £43 for a 63Ah Vectra one.

Nickcc101, when the battery is changed the steering has to be reset and also the windows may have to be reset, the tech did the steering by turning it full lock it both directions a couple of times, some of the more informed people on here will give you more details.

When the battery is changed or disconnected the roof and windows do require setting again along with ESP if fitted, funny thing though my 129 did not always ask for those things to be re set, but most do

Thanks for the info but its the SRS malfunction light and warning on the multifunction display that has come on following the battery change and not the ESP warning light. Everything else seems ok and the airbag off light is not illuminated. All the other posts i have seen refer to the ESP light/steering wheel reset.

One could always leave the battery off again for a couple of hour, to see if this re sets.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I have a feeling that as this is a safety item and it does need STAR to clear it. I am very sure that this has been up before

I had the BAS and ESP warnings come up after fitting the new battery , i did the steering reset ie lock to lock a few times and reset the windows but do i need to rest the ESP at all???

I'm not getting any errors up.

I also had to put the radio code in of course but the clock was fine just 3 minutes slow (guess thats how long the car was disconnected for)

I have just changed the battery on my E240 and also have BAS & ESP errors showing. Strangely, the radio code is also not being accepted :(

Is the resetting a job one can do oneself, please?
Is the radio code also associated?

Thanks,
John

Oops! Sorry, I have now read about the steering reset procedure and got rid of the BAS & ESP warnings.

However, the radio still refuses to accept the reset code. After putting the last digit in and pressing the right-hand knob, it returns to the first digit again in an endless cycle.
Any ideas, please, about how to proceed?

John

If it's the same as my radio, you have to press and HOLD the right hand knob in for a 'few seconds' until it accepts the code - worked on my last week.

And remember that you will need to reset the electric windows too...

Thank you so much, Ribby. Yes, that was the solution and I now have sound again. Very much obliged for the tip.

Now, do you have the secret for the windows as well, please? They run up and down on half-pressure but no movement on the double-pressure.

With the key in 2, lower the windows and hold the switch for 10 sec, then do the same in the closed mode
