Hi all, I've just joined this forum & would welcome some advice on the new C Class.
I'm considering buying the 220 CDI or the 320 CDI.
I have test driven both & I'm suitably impressed, however, whilst the 320 is definitely more appealing, mpg is a major factor for me because I am about to change jobs & will be driving 16,000 miles per anum merely travelling to & from work.
I don't mind paying the extra £4k (ish) to purchase the 320 (once all the options are added to each model), but I am concerned about the mpg.

Can any NEW C Class owners (220 CDI & 320 CDI) give me first hand experience of the average mpg they are experiencing?

Many thanks in anticipation of your responses.

Hello,

While I cannot speak for a C class, my dad has the E320cdi (estate) and his regularly does over 40mpg think his average is around 44, on a recent trip from Chester to Dover he just got 50mpg.

His car is now on 60K and as with all cars they do losen up with miles.

I have to say if it were my choice and you can afford either, then the C320cdi would be my choice, purely when you come back from a long day at work using the back roads...:)

Its great in his car so can only assume in the C320Cdi it would even better

Cheers

Hi & Welcome,

I have the V6 320CDI in my E and have averaged 37.5 mpg for the last 16K miles. Most trips the computer registers ~40mpg. I do do a high mileage although not much motorway work. I have also been enjoying the tyre shredding torque of this one , so not driving to the highest economy.

I have the C320 Cdi (W203) and have over the last 12000 miles got an average of 38 mpg. No idea how much only motorway would be. Not bad considering the power on tap.

The 220 would be over 50.

The new 220 is a gem.

But as you say, once you add all the extras (as in Comand auto etc) the price dif is very small indeed.

Very many thanks guys, I feel much more confident about the purchase now that I have some feedback from real owners.
I'm also glad that the 320 is capable of 'close to' 40 mpg.

The 320 I test drove was certainly very impressive. I currently drive a Mazda RX8 and the performace of the 320 was very similar.... but much, much smoother, and of course I only get 20 mpg out of the RX8.

Glad to help. Somehow I think the C320 Cdi is quicker than a RX8 due to the fantastic amount of torque and in-gear performance. Even an M3 will struggle!

Well guys, I'm nearly there... on the verge of orderering a new C320 CDI.

The deal is almost agreed, I just need the general manager, of the local dealer, to agree to provide a temporary car for me (a banger will suffice) for the period between selling the RX8 (3 weeks time) & getting the new Merc. (early January'ish).

Hope it gets ratified tomorrow, then I can't wait!

Why not trade it in when the new one comes?

By the way, since fitting my Brabus kit, the average MPG has gone up to 45.3!!!

I have managed to secure a half decent price for the sale of my RX8 to the dealer I bought it from. However, the price is only for a month, hence my reason to sell it soon & get a temporary car.
The trade-in price offered to me by the MB dealer wasn't very good, but with a discount for cash, plus the reasonable deal for the RX8 from the Mazda dealer, the overall package is quite attractive.
A little bit of messing about but worth it for an extra £1k.
