I bought a new CLK 240 in July 2002. I have done just about 11000 miles and the rear tyres are completely bald in the middle section. I am a bit naffed off at this 'cause its not gonna be cheap to replace them. Has anyone else had the same problem, as it may be a fault with the set-up of the car.

No doubt about it, over inflated.

Check your gauge. If it's OK, ask the Stealer why MB are recommending pressures that are too high.

What make tyres and how do you drive?

I wore out my rears in 10,000...

Any misalignment or fault is unlikely to result in the middle of both tyres wearing, but you can get MB to check the alignment for you anyway.

The make of my tyres is Pirelli. I drive moderately, plus the car has got ESP, so I would have expected the front to wear out quicker with the turning etc.

This has always been a problem on my Mercs past and present.....they always have tyres that wear out in the middle, leaving the outside eges looking like new.

I too have kept an eagle eye on pressures, but now run on the "Komfort" settings which tends to provide better wear.

Next time you sit behind a Merc in traffic have a look at the back wheels....I bet the outside edges are proud of the road surface.

For reference, I got 25000 out of my back tyres and 50,000 out of the fronts on my sadly deperated E220 Cdi.......a lot of motorway mileage and I didn't tend to give it much welly from a standing start.

Andrew,

The manufacturers figures are only a guide.

If you wanted an indicator which shows if the tyres are overinflated, you couldn't get a better one then wear in the middle.

Time to reduce the pressures, or carry a couple of cement sacks around in the boot at all times.

Well I have worked on M.B's now for getting on 20 years
and I am not aware of any concerns on tyres wearing in the middle of the tread, lots of other concerns, yes, but not this one. This can only be due to to tyre pressures being too high. I think off the top of my head they are unladen f.29psi r32psi, but follow the label on the inside of the flap.

A diesel
I did notice wear in the centre of my last rear tyres. The pressures were always spot on.
Interestingly I had Pirelli 6000s on the car. I now have a full set of Michelin Pilot Premacy.
I went off the Pirellis because they wore even when the car was standing still and they wore unevenly on all four. The geometry is good.
