T212 facelift, 2013. A few toys including pan roof, 19" rims, Harmon Kardon, nappa, privacy glass.
Well 400 miles in, two weeks since delivery and my brand new e class is in the workshop. The air con is stuck on sub zero frost setting as the brain of the heater is no longer talking to the car - so I have been told.

Car went in Wednesday and still waiting for the part.

Not a good start

Chin up, this is why you have a guarantee, upsetting yes and an odd fault not been up before

I feel your pain! :(

I bought my previous car when the new model was just out, and it suffered from just about every imaginable teething problem there was - in the first year, I had to take it back 14 times. (It got to a point where I tried to return it, arguing that it wasn't fit for purpose, but nothing doing.) So whilst a warranty is undoubtedly better than no warranty, it doesn't mean you won't have any hassles.

I think the takeaway from that is, don't buy a new model in its first year, wait until they sort out the biggest bugs.

Although is is branded as a new model, surely the 2013 E class is just a facelift of what was before, i.e. not a new model?

It is a midlife facelift to a 2009 model.

You may be right, in which case my comment was clearly nonsense. (In fact, worse than that, it was diametrically opposed to this situation.) :)

I also would have said the 2013 MY was just a facelift, only my local dealer seems to think it's a new model. But that's probably just the salesman and MB marketing dept talking!

Which raises a question (and sorry to be hijacking this thread): what actually constitutes a new model as opposed to a mere facelift? Is a new Wxxx model number the way to tell?

I would say that when a new platform comes out then we have a new model, but saying that many new models are put on an existing newish platform, and not the platform the the last generation had.

It is a 212 facelift, but with something like 2000 changes (or so they say).

The air con unit is the same as the non facelift, so not sure we can blame the fail on new 'stuff'.

My gripe is that it should not fail and having bought a nicely spec'd e I am currently driving an average spec'd B. will be haggling for a free service when I get it back.

Also concerned it will never go back the same and creak/rattle as when I saw it the centre of the dash was out, the speedo and all the cluster dials were out and sitting on my lovely new nappa.

Sorry to hear about your problem with the 212.

It's hard to believe in this day and age that so much has to be dismantled to sort out an a/c fault, I would have thought that car designers would have figured out modular technology by now.

Hope it all goes back together OK

As an aside my old Rover SD1 3.5 was one of the best cars I have worked on, the dash binacle sat on top of the dashboard and just lifted off, way ahead of it's time.

Well, it just gets better.

Picked the car up today and the leather is dented from the contents of the dashboard sitting there over the weekend. I was told this would come out in a week or two. I promised to return in a week if it did not.

What was more upsetting was the 6 scratches to the veneer on the sliding door (where the conventional gear stick would be) where they have clearly slide the air con unit out.

They accept responsibility (how jolly decent) and the manager is going to ring me today to tell me how he is going to resolve this. At the time of writing this, it is 20:07 hours, so guess that call ain't gonna happen.

Very disappointed with the original failure, the lack of care the techs took over a brand new £52k car and the managers inability to bother to contact me.

On the bright side, he will have a nice letter on the mat when he arrives.

Way ahead of its time, or just a cost cutting measure to make it easier to make a LHD or RHD SD1?

Yes, that was the reason for it. You could also take it indoors along with your briefcase, according to a (tongue in cheek) road test of that time.
