MY 2018 E 220D saloon
Hi everyone.
Just a quick hello. I have a 2018 E220 coming soon, in the next week or so. No doubt I`ll be asking a few questions over the next few weeks but not too many.
Hopefully I`l be able to contribute to the forum myself and looking forward to my new car.
Cheers all.

Andy

Welcome and congratulations on buying one of the best MB packages out there. My son has a 16 plate 220D and he loves it, plenty of power, sublime 9 spd box and 50mpg average all in a very comfortable package, the OM654 engine is a gem. The biggest revelation for me is how comfortable the ride is on 20” alloy wheels with run flat tyres, MB have done a wonderful job on the suspension.

As an aside he intended to keep the car for 2 years but he’s already talking about keeping it longer

Hope you enjoy the car as much and do keep us updated

Thanks everyone.

Malcolm, as my mrs will mostly be using this, (I`ll still use my Jag for work) there won`t be many miles put on it. I work all over the UK so will get a shot at the weekends :) and we`ll probaly keep it 5 years or so.
I must admit, I did like the look of the new 'A' class in the showroom so that may well be our next car. I should retire in about 5-6 years so that will fit in nicely with the timescale for downsizing.

I too have just bought a (secondhand) E220 Estate, 66 reg, and comment as follows:

Yes, the car is impressive, but I'm not at all happy with its 20" runflat tyres. (As you MB aficionados will know, the tyres on the front are even a different size to those on the back).

Today, halfway between London and Kent on the eastbound M2, the dash warned me my OSR was deflating rapidly. Fortunately, this event occurred minutes before a Service Station, so I quickly pulled in, having driven about a mile with 10 kPa in the tyre. I attempted to put some air in it, to no avail. I then verified the machine was in good order by putting air into the good NSR without any problem. What to do? I called MB Rescue who had two suggestions: 1) wait for the RAC at the M2 services, or 2) drive to MB Maidstone who (by chance) had the very tyre I would doubtless need having driven 11 miles on the airless offending tyre. I chose the latter.

I got to MB Maidstone in half an hour, only to be informed their tyre fitter had gone home, despite MB Rescue having told me he'd spoken to them about my plight and that I was on my way to buy the tyre. I don't believe it! "No fear", MBM said, "just across the road is Stapletons Tyre Services. The Receptionist(?) at MBM confided they use STS for their tyres, so you shouldn't have any problems. At this point, I thought there's every chance STS won't have the exact tyre in stock so, there and then, I offered to buy the only tyre from MBM. [I hope you're keeping up with this saga]. "Oh no sir", said the Receptionist, "I can't sell you that tyre because it belongs to STS". Really?

I went across to STS and guess what? They didn't have that tyre in stock, nor at any of their Branches. I pointed out to the helpful guy at STS that MBM across the road actually have the very tyre. Why not use that? "Oh no sir", said the STS Tyre guy, "I can't sell you that tyre because it belongs to MBM". Unbelievable!

[I'll try to speed up ...] By this time, I decided to ring around tyre companies in the area - the only solution I found was in Footscray where they had two tyres at £315 each, but they were not Goodyear, they were Dunlop. Too expensive, I thought.
I'll just drive on to Faversham with my three passengers to meet our host and let MB sort it out from there. Eventually, an RAC tow truck loaded my car up with one flat tyre, bound for my local dealer MB in Brentford, where I'm told I'll be able to collect it at some point next week, when they have sourced and fitted a tyre.

Meanwhile, two guys rocked up at Faversham from Europcar Dover with a C-class Hire Car, courtesy of MB Rescue. They then went off in their second car. All this for a flat tyre! Who the hell wants runflat tyres if they're this much trouble?

[Well done if you've you managed to read all the way down to here].

So, can some informed person answer this? Can I replace my 20" run flats with ordinary 20" tyres and still be insured?

Chris

Yes you can I’ve been just asked my insurer Aviva that exact question about my BM 4 series 435i and they weren’t in the slightest bit interested I don’t even have to inform them of the change. If you do change go for the next load ratio to the runflats fitted to your car or the handling might be a bit on the soggy side and of course ask your insurer.

My son has 20in wheels fitted to his 220d

Mine had 17” normal tyres, comfortable, cheap to replace and gave great economy. The fashion for huge rims is madness

The 20" tyres on my other half's 2016 Astra are £200 quid a throw and the ride is as choppy as a 70's BR single unit train, isn't that price just madness? Tyres for my E are half that, and for Goodyears. Give me my std Benz wheels anyday!

I didn't pay that for the N rated tyres on my 911, now that was a car that required good tyres it also had the suspension to handle it, not sure an Astra requires 200mph tyres...

I only paid £114 each for a pair of 255 x 18" P Zero's on mine, I know they were 20" but what on earth where they

I know, its crazy. The best 20's we could find were so expensive. There was a site for Asda Tyres but I'm not sure how that works, they were 'budget' tyres. I will only go with known brands (even on the Astra)! Paranoid about a good quality and safe ride I guess!!
