Petrol Engines on the Way Out?

Worth checking out the new E class on the Mb website.

All the small petrol engines have gone. No longer any version of the 180/200 Kompressors

And no 230 either.

And no 280 petrol!

The first available petrol engine is the 350cgi and what a price tag for an entry level petrol burner. Apart from that the E 500 as usual.

On the diesel front, where they clearly expect most future sales to be, there are two versions of the new twin turbo cdi engine of almost 2.2 litres (one with 170 bhp as now) and the other with 204 bhp and a monstrous 500 of torque. Emissions like an A class and therefore good on business tax too.

There is also the V6 diesel of 3 litres now called the 350cdi Blue Efficiency with only 181 gms CO2 emissions and over 40mpg despite performance only a tad short of the 3.5 litre petrol version.

And it says ‘more diesel engines to come’.

I am amazed the smaller petrol engines have gone as they are used on the C class. Does this suggest the slow demise of petrol power or are some new petrol engines just around the corner?

It will be interesting if the new diesels can meet the 2012 criteria

There's a 250CGi (1.8L) lurking somewhere.

It's interesting because many people think diesel engines won't be here for much longer and the short/medium term future is small capacity turbo or supercharged petrol engines. MB have some developments in that area.

ETA: This article http://www.topgear.com/uk/mercedes-benz/e-class/road-test/e250cdi also mentions E200CGI (as well as E250CGI) but suggests refinement issues - perhaps MB have hung back on announcing those engines until that's sorted?

Further petrol models will probably be launched next year. It's the way they tend to do things.

"Oh no, we couldn't possibly make it run on a 200K engine..............Well not until we squeeze more power out of it, lik ein the new engine we're working on".

In continental Europe the majority of sales have been diesel for years now, whereas in the USA, hardly any at all. I think the UK motoring public have caught on to diesels - high mileage motorists in particular. Once you acquire the taste for the torque and fewer fill ups, it ceases to be a debate.

I was on one of the US forums lately & even they could not believe how little money used MB V8's were going for. Even in the US when petrol costs rise, they look at alternatives. It would not surprise me if more of them turned to diesels in the near future.

Quite clear that MB, VW and BMW think they will as that is where the emphasis is being placed by all of them.

And if the engines could not meet the new regulations, the politicians would change the regs. Quite right too. Sensible to proceed at a technically feasible pace IMO.

Terrific review and well worth a read.

The startling figure they give is that almost 9 out of every 10 E's sold in the UK were diesels. Hardly any point in offering the petrols, I suppose.

I read somewhere that BMW said the demand for V8's is now so small it is hardly economic to go on making them.

When I bought my W211 320 CDI in 2003, the petrol 320 cost more. The same is true of the S Class (W 220) I run now.

At this point, you either have to have a diesel phobia (= irrational fear), or similar problem to want to continue buying petrol cars.

I would just love an SL with the 320 CDI engine!

Its the age old Petrol head v Diesel Head argument, both have their plusses and minusses!

For example, my C220cdi has been giving me 22mpg to work, my ML500 has been returning 19.6 same journey, horses for courses, depends how, why, where you drive your car, for what purpose and your style!

I hope both Diesel and Petrol survive, both have their plusses, I can certainly see why you would choose a V8 petrol over diesel, the miles per smile per mile are so much higher than the dervs!

The way that Diesel is priced in the UK puts the 350CGI as a good choice against the 320CDI. The current 320CDI is faster than the 350CGI although if I was having to make my choice now I would probably be in a 350CGI. I will have to see what the new 320CDI is like although it will be at least 2 years away for me and probably an estate as I will need 7 seats.

Will 7 be enough by then??

Really would help if you learned to read English:D I merely pointed out that on the MB website -in English - it is quite clear that no small petrols are being offered in the UK -at least for the moment. Clear for all to see.

As for the rest of your post, I get far more smiles per mile from diesel than from petrol and given that nearly 90% of E's sold in the UK choose diesel it seems quite a few others do too.

Why are petrol choosers so defensive? They always seem to want to attack diesel owners. Hardly ever see the reverse happening.

You like petrol engines. I do too. But I marginally prefer diesel now they have come so far and offer better performance, more responsiveness and quieter cruising at lower revs than petrol. Check out the figures on the 3 litre diesel against the 3.5 litre petrol. Interesting.

What... speak the language of the Islen Affen.... oh dear! I must be turning Bavarian

Anyone contemplating a new buy, forget England, head to Germany and you can choose a UK spec car with the engine and gearbox and drivetrain and tons of options not available to Mercedes UK (why oh why does a little man in an office have to dictate to the English people what Mercedes they can buy beats me!!!).

I have 2 petrol and 2 diesels cars.... kind of says it all really! But the V8 is so sweet, it warms the cockles of your heart :)

I think the tide is turning against diesels in the wider used car market, especially as the forecourt price of diesel is higher - don't underestimate how stupid many people are, a lot of people have it in their heads diesel is dearer than petrol. Price premiums for used diesels have largely disappeared.

The other thing that's happening is that the more recent extra-complicated diesels such as Ford's TDCi are getting to be a few years old now and some are having expensive and irresolveable problems. Having to buy a new high-pressure fuel pump would write off a 5-6 year old Mondeo and people are becoming more aware of things like that. A set of injectors can be over £1000.

Thankfully, you don't hear of the same problems with Mercedes but the perception still invades people's minds and puts them off.

I'm a bit confused about the new model line up.
If you look at the 2 models the prices are within a couple of hundred of each other. Specifiying heated seats on the 220 would make it more expensive. The 250 is substantially faster and mpg/co2 identical. So, why buy a 220? Clearly they've spotted this anomoly and provided the lower model with free auto, whereas the 250 its a cost option, presumably to provide some model differentiation. When firms de-spec higher models I can't help feeling that somebody is playing games as the truth is that there is no real need for the 220. Then again, aside from the refinement, which may be a good enough argument in itself, there isn't a real need for the 350 either.
