OK, I'v e found an engine for £540 including VAT and delivery - it's still in the car and has done 128,000 miles. Given mine had only done 68,000 is this a problem?

(BTW the garage has given me an AUdi which I have just taken through 200,000 miles and I am now slightly less scared of high mileage cars than I used to be!)

Not if it's been serviced more than your old motor!

Plus your odometer stays the same in any case.

I was a bad man. I put 40000 miles on my last MB. It had 108,000 on it when I sold it on. I didn't change the oil during my ownership. I saw it recently, back up for sale after 3.5 years...with 167,000 miles on it.

I didn't deserve that car.

I might feel the need to question whether your's has really only done that miles;
under the circumstances.

Fair point ... although there is a "service history" - the last service before the one when I bought it was four years ago ...
