Hi new user here. My Auto box on my 300te 1988 approx 200,000 miles has developed a mind of its own. Sometimes only 1 gear is available 2nd i think as it never changes up at all, but more normally it will change to 3rd but then never change up to fourth. At one alarming point it shifted without reason into 2nd at speed! Is this the terminal "Slipping Box" that i hear. I think the wire to the bos mode selector may be loose - Econony / Standard switch as I can see a dodgy looking wire through the selector slot - could this be the cause? ANY help will be good even if it is bad news or a price £££ for a new box

Well I am no expert on auto boxes (largely because mine has been OK - touching wood).

But.

I would have thought you should resolve the obvious (loose wires) but of course that may just be a red herring.

A change of oil and filters may help but after that you need an expert to diagnose.

Hope this is helpful........

Merc guys in sussex

Hi Battle wagon bloke!! I would try the main dealer Rivervale for some parts as they do fairly ok discount on older mercs (dont know if they count yours as old though). But for service work I think John Haynes is the man. They are based in Goring (Worthing , near Goring train station I think)and are very well known in Merc world. I have not used them yet but intend to take my old girl there when back on the road. Look out for a mint light blue 72' 280 CE in Brighton, Good luck..
