Hi

I have owned several Mercedes over the years - Three S Class, one SEL a couple of E Classes and currently a 2003 CLK 270 CDI with the OM612 engine.

This car always starts and usually drives perfectly, however, it intermittently ‘loses power’ - noticeably the responsive acceleration / kick down. Stopping the car and restarting the engine usually fixes this and all seems well but only for a variable amount of time. This is removing most of the pleasure of driving it!

My local independent garage tells me that they have diagnosed the issue to ‘a faulty inlet manifold flap motor’.

I’d appreciate some help in understanding their diagnosis and what, if anything, I could do to test it before committing to the cost of replacement parts and the considerable labour cost. I’m not clear how it could be a faulty flap motor if simply restarting the engine usually fixes the issue. I have read with interest many posts here on the forum but have not as yet found any that ‘fit’ my needs so I’d be most grateful if any of you can help me by pointing me to suitable posts or from personal experience.

Thanks in anticipation.

It sounds like the swirl flaps which are located in the inlet manifolds and are operated by the motor )which the garage refers to ) are sticking occasionally because they are being slowly gunged up by soot in the inlet manifolds .
On the later om642 engine (mine) there is a bypass involving a 4.7k ohm resistor being put in the electrical supply to the motor which kids the car it into thinking it’s all still working and connected . I don’t know if that’s a possibility that’s worth trying on your car ??

Hi Wighty,
Many thanks for the suggestion. Are you aware of any posts that indicate where, or indeed detail how, to place such a bypass?

My knowledge of it is only for the om642 engine . If it’s possible I’m sure someone else will chime in . Any Google search of “om642 inlet port motor (or swirl flap motor) resistor fix” will bring stuff up .
