New MAF for a diesel C220 CDi estate

Hello, Due to general power loss and the car intermittently going into limp mode (but with no ECU warning light coming on), I have been advised by a local garage to have a new MAF fitted. They quoted £220 for the unit and £25 for fitting (all plus VAT). On the internet I can find supposedly genuine MAFs for about £160. My question here is: Is the fitting charge too high? When I queried it they said, The MAF has to be programmed. Well, it doesn't look like a 'programmable' device to me and it is just secured with two hose clips and a connector. Also, the garages SnapOn ECU code reader could not find my engine ECU in its data base so they took the car to the local Merc dealer for checking. Has anyone else had this problem?

The MAF should just be plug n play! It is a 5 min job to fit but I dont think £25 is a rip off.

As Gazzab its just plug and play.

Not sure on your MAF but the inserts that fit in your own housing cost £57 from bosch or £157 with the housing

MAF fitting

Thanks to both of you. I think I may as well just buy the unit from Bosch and fit myself. Is there any point in buying the housing as well?

None what so ever, you may need to buy the special torx socket to remove it (halfords) but they cost nothing.

The plastic housing never goes wrong

Check the number of splines on the torx (security!) bolts. Mine were 5 not the usual 6. Halfords will have the 6s but probably not the 5s.

Its easy to remove the screws with a good set of grips too, the pin in the middle on some screws has got bigger!! so the right torx bits with the larger hole are required.

Thanks again. I have no worries about the screws as I took my insert out some time ago during investigations to see if there was any visible fault. Needless to say there wasn't! Where is the best place to buy the unit? Ebay??

You two are having a nice little chat together!! I will try the MAF on Tuesday and if the problem is not fixed I may take you up on the offer Jib. I live near Battle E. Sussex so Cambridge is a bit far but not too bad if the car does not go into limp mode again!!
