Hello, it would be great if you guys can help me on this first MB I've purchased. It's great to drive and only 62k on a auto 1989 2.0 model. I have the following probs:

1. I note that sometimes the driver's (inside) door handle does not spring back after it's opened from inside. has anyone encountered similar probs?

2. The front left tyre is much more worn than the others. I've noticed the car go to the left if the steering is not held straight on a levelled road. Is this a tracking issue or more serious steering/suspension problem?

3. I've got service history and the previous owner had the car for 12 years. Any idea how I can verify whether the mileage is real? I've phoned the garage where it was last serviced but no longer exists. The car is immaculate inside and out!

I'd really appreciate if you can help me on this. Also, can someone an recommend economical MB specialist in the East London area?

Forgot to add that the milometer needle shakes when it's moving up. Could this mean it's clocked or just worn. This is my biggest concern

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of MB :D

1, More than likely the lock operating rods just need greasing. Might just be the door lock, try giving it a spray of WD40 other wise you'll have to remove the inner door trim to get to the operating rods.

2, Hopefully the tyre issue is just tracking, take it for a free check. Which part of the tyres worn and is the pressure correct? I wouldn't expect wear in the suspension at only 62,000 miles, but if there is the parts aren't expensive and it's an easy car to work on.

3, If you've got some service history, the cars in good condition and the mileage seems genuine then I wouldn't worry too much. It's not a car which is targeted for clocking and if the previous owners owned it for twelve years I would tend to think that's a good sign.

4, I've heard good things about http://psmotors.com/ but that's just word of mouth and I've had no experience with them. For spare parts firstly try your main dealer (you'll be suprised), and then try http://www.eurocarparts.com/

5, I had a speedo wobble on my 230CE, never got any worse in the seven years I owned it. The speedo's electronic so it's probably just an bad connection.

Thanks for your reply,
Yes, it was tracking. However, just noticed that there is considerable wobble at over 40mph. I presume the chaps who did the tracking didn't balance the wheel as I did put a new one on! Will need to take it in again (I wish they'd thought of doing it!).

Just got it serviced and replaced pads and discs (front). Will also grease the joints as you've suggested. Will let you know how I get on. As a matter of interest, other than changing the oil and filter, isn't there any tuning that needs to be done on the car? The mechanic didn't think so.

I have had 2 x 190's, a 230te and now a 300te. The only one whos speedo didnt wobble was the 230!!
Dont worry about it.

With regard to clocking, check the instrument cluster for screw marks, scratches etc, this will indicate a new pod has been put in.

Also, not teaching you to suck eggs, but what do the Gearstick, pedals, steering wheel, seat bases and backs, and carpets look like? Excessively shiny is not good, but expect a little wear.

You sound like you have bought a good un, your intuition is always the best indication.
Enjoy it
Mike

Ps You think you have snags with the tracking, my gearbox has just gone..aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrggggg
