hi all, i have a question about the automatic gearbox on my '86 190E 2.0: it seems reluctant to engage reverse gear (although eventuallly goes in)... and seems not to like being put into 2nd or 3rd. drives fine in normal auto select position (D). is this something that will get worse, should i see to it now? any help or info very gratefully received.

thanks, will check this as soon as i get chance. someone told me that sometimes the gearbox 'bands' need adjustment ... i'm a stranger to autoboxes, is this something the averagely competent mechanic could do?

Don?t touch it mate!
Had to have my box rebuilt- apparent cause was someone trying to tighten the bands that didn?t know what they were doing  .
Take it to a specialist to look at, sooner rather than later!
Get a Haynes manual; it will say the same thing!
Best wishes & Good luck

If the box is slow to select reverse this can sometimes be an indication of worn valve bodies or fluid blowing by the valve seals. The reason reverse suffers first is it uses higher pressure than D,3 and 2.

Hi

Wazza I can't agree with what you are saying. As far as I am aware the same pressure is delivered throughout the box. The cause is more like to be either worn clucth packs. The seals in LB3 (reverse) or the LB3 piston split releasing the pressure. Either way the gearbox will need to come appart.

thanks to all for your helpful and informative replies. if establishing the correct fluid level does not clear the problem, i will take the car to a gearbox or/and MB specialist ... hope it's just fluid level though, as it's a fairly old car and wouldn't warrant chucking hundreds of pounds at
