Hello and welcome

Why do you want a diesel is the first, and probably most important question.

In most cases the answer these days (unfortunately) is that you don’t.

Or if you do, you won’t be able to visit places if it’s a euro 5 and you’ll be visiting the dealers regularly for expensive repairs if it’s a euro 6 :(

I had an early (I think it was a 2008) C class 220 CDI AMG (whatever it was - sport edition?).

I bought it from a 'well setup' second hand dealer that had stock of lots of German cars a few years old - there were probably lots of ex-lease cars in that stock. Mine had 32k miles on it and I took it up to 85k approx and only needed a bulb, brake pads, tyres and servicing. It was such a positive ownership experience that I have recently come back to MB, and after two months of owning my second MB I wonder if I will ever chose to buy another brand again.

The C220 I had was a brilliant all-rounder, quick enough when needed. My previous car to the C220 was an E46 M3 so I was pleasantly surprised by the C220. By no means anywhere near as quick, but still capable. Build quality was superb and not a single rattle or noise from the car at all. I often still think of it as a really really good car.

I think a good warranty is key, that applies to modern complex petrol and hybrids too if you want peace of mind...the theory that only diesels can throw up huge bills is a myth...a friend with an audi S4 will explain!

Of course everyone will have personal experiences with each but buy based on your use case.

I am pleased with my c250d, but then it will get long distance usage on a pretty regular basis.

Good luck in your search !

I have never heard that theory, but there is probably a heck of a lot of theories I have never heard of. My largest ever repair cost was circa £22,000 for a replacement engine. That was on a petrol car, not an MB. Thankfully I had main dealer warranty.
The E46 M3 can split it's rear sub frame and that will cost a lot. I have two friends who had new Audi (petrols) that needed new engines.

OP - I also got about 65mpg out of the CDi 220. That is a good enough argument for diesel afaic. Second is the longevity of the diesel engine. There is a very very very good reason that most boats and ships use diesel, at least until you get to the larger sized boats where they use heavy fuel oil which is not to dissimilar to crude oil. That good reason is the longevity and reliability. I always thought it was a bad design decision to make a modern car diesel engine that will cut out when the battery gets low, a bad idea because a diesel does not need electricity to keep running and could still get you home even if your battery failed. A yacht will get you home on the diesel engine if the batteries & alternator fail (assuming the engine was already started), but a car could do, but they design them not to; presumably because you wouldn't be able to use it at night, or in the rain or any of the electric components needed to run the car. Nevertheless, diesel technology is supremely reliable and robust.

There's nothing wrong with diesel technology per se but it’s all the equipment needed to clean up the exhaust emissions to Euro 6+ standards which is what can be flaky and can cost a lot to repair if it goes wrong.

Horses for courses! I have a 2008 Euro 4 S204 C220Cdi, I have no intention of entering Sadiqahole Khan land or other areas with stupid restrictions, wife and I both love the car, have owned it for 9 years now - which is a long time for us compared to historical car ownership. It's really comfortable, economical, meets all our needs for shopping or visiting family 120 miles away or friends a similar distance, passes its MoT - only small thing is that as it gets little use mainly short journeys and lives on the driveway, I periodically have to run the extension lead and battery charger out to it - but the condition monitor tells me when, and as I can close the tailgate over the extension lead I can leave it on charge overnight and the smart charger does its thing and switches off when finished.

So - I have a car I paid 15.5k for 9 1/2 years ago probably worth what - 5k now? We're both retired and on limited income, so how can we economically switch to something more "PC"?? Any form of hybrid or EV is out of the question, so our current thinking is that we will drive the S204 until it or we die, and sod the PC brigade!
