I have had my Mercedes E230 1997 for about 5 mths now and part of its history was being Transport for the Stars in and around Chelsea in London.
All the windows have been tinted,as well as the Driver side Door mirror, which was so dark that the view was distorted.
I decided to replace it with a stick on mirror and for the 2 moths that it stayed on there it was fine..needless to say i found it in a heap on the floor one morning.
I bought another mirror to stick on but noticed that the dark tint on the original mirror was starting to disappear,so decided to leave it a while to see how it progressed.
However after a couple of weeks one morning to my horror i found that the mirror had leaked the tint, and left a long dark sticky residue all down the door panel which will not come off.
Now i am facing a respray and new mirror ..so what i would like to know is if the mirror can be replaced or will it have to be the complete unit. Thanks Dell

You can buy the original glass fro MB they are expensive, the are also on Ebay, take a look. why not clean it all up and put the self adhesive one back
Re sticky residue on door I feel sure that petrol or lighter fuel (refinned petrol)will wipe it away.

I know that sign writers use Meths. It would have to be strong though. Just be carefull that you do not leave excess on the paint work. I use meths to get Tarr off when I give the car it's spring polish, this is followed with a good hose down, wash and some color magic to bring the car back to it's bright former self.

Try a small area first and keep a bucket of water with a sponge to hand.

Collegues E220's Drivers Door mirror leaked whatever they use for the auto-dimming. This stained the door and could not be removed. He eneded up having the door sprayed.

Hi, Thanks for all your advise,I have just taken it to MB for advise and they have said the same thing as Blobcat it is inside the mirror and is used for auto-dimming, the stain is there to stay ,although i did remove some of it with all of your suggestions..a bit of good news the replacement mirror is about £45 + Vat ..which is better than £150+ I was quoted from our local supplier.Only wish I had done this before and saved myself the cost of a respray

Really glad you've got it sorted. Just out of interest, how much to respray the door?

As M6 - Glad its sorted. Have you had a quote to respray the door yet and if so is it a cost for just the door or a cost to fade into the rear and the wing? (that is if its met finish).
As I have not seen the car it would be hard to cost it for you but as a general rule prices will range from around £100 per panel. + the added prep depending on how much damage the leaking stuff caused.

Is that £45 for a heated and auto-dimming glass? if so where from?

Hi,The cost of the mirror is just for the clip on mirror it is not electric, also i declined having another auto-dimmer,especially if it is capable of doing this sort of damage should it brake again.Anyway i wanted to replace it before it leaked,as it was to dark and distorted.
I did not get a quote for the respray from MB,but a local Garage who quoted £200 for the lower half of the door. The car is Silver. There is a brown line about 10ins long from just below the mirror running straight down.
I have not yet committed to the respray yet as i was going to get a few more quotes before we decide...Thanks Dell

O44 MB Briliant silver is a bass coat water based system, the top clear is quite thick, if you are thinking about having it resprayed, why not try T-Cut first, you have nothing to lose, they are going to flat it anyway before they can re paint. give it a go
