Hello to all of you. I couldn't find a new members forum so decided to post in here and if I'm wrong can someone please move.

Although I don't currently own an MB I'm looking to purchase a used MLto replace my Mazda 6. Funds only allow me to go up to around £4k but there are a few out there.I've looked at a couple which in the ads look good but on viewing aren't up to scratch.

The only thing I am struggling to find is a guide on what to look for when buying an ML, things like known faults, niggles to look for ect. Also I can't find a trim level guide as what model has what trim.

If any of you good people could point me in the direction of a guide or reply with snippets of information would be gratefully received and you will then have another happy member.

Thanks

Hello and welcome, you cannot always get an answer that quick, we have many ML owners and if you used the search facility you could learn a lot about any common faults, some owners should answer if you give them a chance

W212/-09/350CDI, W219/-07/320CDI, EX:W220/-01/320CDI, EX:W211/-04/320CDI, EX:W210/-01/270CDI
Try search w163... Also you could define are you after diesel or petrol, there are basically same engines in same MY cars (=same 'features').

Edit: OR W164 (forgot that in UK you may have a one with 4k?)

2001 ml270 cdi
Hello

Hi,
I bought a 2001 ML270 earlier this year,(see my posts for pictures)
I paid £3000 for my one and got a great bargain.
She is powerful, smooth and has an amazing amount of space.
I have a few niggles but slowly working on them.
There is alot of useful info on here for ML270 owners with pictures.

Just search for W163 as well as ML270.

Enjoy !

I have one but went for the 320 petrol over the diesel, only reason being the diesel doesnt give that good a MPG and its heavy on the front end, the 320 isnt any good on MPG either but the handling is much better.

Suspension and ball joints, front end torsion bars withe shock, other end coil over shocks, the stut is sold as a complete item at roughly £300 from MB and the rear coils do break.
Suspension parts for the ML are expensive compared to other MB cars.!

Brakes nothing special but I priced up rear disks and pads on a 270 today at over £250 for the parts so again expensive ECP are cheaper.

Gearboxes are generally good but check the hi lo switch on the dash and be sure it works.

Petrol engines (5.0 v8) the one to go for are expensive to service and coil packs, leads and plugs very expensive. 02 sensors on the petrol there are 4 £160 each.

Tyre wear is poor and 255 treads are stupid money.

Rust yes they rust.

get a 270cdi and chip it to 200bhp and you have a nice motor.

Love mine and will always have a w163.

jib

Window switch pack will fail at some point £100

I work on all sorts of mercs and love my ML55. Yes it's heavy on fuel but it's a cracking car and very reliable. As above I would look for a petrol 3.2 rather than the derv version.
They can be quite troublesome, and with the budget you have I would be anticipating problems down the line

I meant the derv could be troublesome not the w163!
