Hi People

Im new to this forum, and am not yet a true member as i dont yet own a merc.

I have, however been 'offered' a 1986/7 manual 190D which needs a headgasket replacing for £200 ( i assume that it is the 2.0 version).

Thats the only information i have on the car im afraid.

Few questions really:

What is performance like in terms of speed - (i know its not great!)

How hard is it to change the headgasket, and do you recommend changing anything else whilst im at it.

What sort of mileages should this run to if looked after?

What sort of consumption should i expect?

Is it possible to convert this into an Auto, and how difficult would it be?

Finally - how could i increase performance - could i attach a turbo to it? :D

Has anyone experienced the vegatable oil instead of diesel thing - is it recommended, does it work?

I hope i do get the car, as my current car drinks petrol, and am finding it difficult to afford the running costs

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answers in order:

Slow.

If it's a four banger then it's 2.0L.

When changing head gasket check the timing chain and tensioner rails, and replace the anti-freeze as this probably caused the gasket to blow in the first place.

It will run and run if looked after reasonably.

35-40 mpg.

It would be possible to convert to an auto, but you need two things; one is a doner car, the other is lots of patience for your journeys as they will be sloooww.

You could attach a turbo, but this would be a real project due to lack of space and manifolds. Also you would have to think how you would increase the fuelling on boost. FORGET IT.

Veggie oil works well in these motors, but remember to pay the tax.
see here: http://www.rerorust.de/

If it's in reasonable nick and you can live with low performance, buy the car.

Thanks for your reply

Thats most my questions answered -

In london, theres not much opportunity to drive fast.

I also own a calibra turbo, and petrol on that is killing me - i think i need to slow down anyway!

Thanks Again
