Just wanted to say hello.
Just bought a 1992 230e for £500 and its fantastic. Not sure about the colour but I am sure it will grow on me! 9 months MOT 6 months tax 120k on the clock. probably about the right price to pay for it, although every button works which is good!! Only issue is the driver door strut is loose and makes a horrendous noise when I open or shut the door!

Is there anything I really need to keep an eye out for?
Its been checked over and everything is fine at the moment but I want to be prepared!!

Cheers.

Hi there, good to see another 230E owner.
Also somewhat new to the Merc ownership, but I have been doing every bit of homework on my car. So if you need to know anything feel free to ask, and I'm sure someone here can help, if I can't.
Enjoy it.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Had the car a week now and it really is a lovely drive.
Only one thing worrying me is when I take my foot off the accelerator there is a strange hissing noise, which goes when i put my foot back on it again, Peculiar!
Anyway I have decided its a bit too "old man" and want to make it look a bit better. What are the best Alloys I can put on without messing with spacers etc?
Need to get rid of the cloth interior too so if anyone has a leather set going let me know!!
Will get some better photos up soon too.
Thanks again for the welcome!

The 'old man' look... that is exactly why I spent close to 6 months trying to find the right car for me. :) The w124 was the one for me from the start, but from the beginning I wanted the Sportline, or at least one with as much of the options on it.

So as for starting with a regular w124 I think the most people here would recommend you try and stick with the OEM formula, don't slap anything on that couldn't have been put by the factory. So the 15" 8-hole Sportline wheels will in my opinion look fantastic on the w124, if you want bigger, try and find the 16" 8-hole wheel. Have a look at this site for some original BM wheels. I am also very tempted by the AMG wheels... http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/mercedes_alloy_wheels/e_class_124 But I reckon I'll get them when I start my AMG project, so watch this space. :)

So some nice alloys, a good polish, a slight suspension tweak, and if you want to go as far as the interior... then some nice trim. And your w124 has the potential to look very fresh. But I do agree with a lot of people on here when they stress that we should try and keep the car original, and not go too far with mods. Before I bought my car my plan was to fit the boot spoiler, and after getting the car, I knew it might spoil from the original character. I've since considered upgrading the lights to facelift spec... but that will take away from the fact that my car is an original 1992 w124, and I don't want to take that away from it. :)

But it all comes down to our own choices in the end. If you want to mod it a lot, no-one here will stop you, if it gives you that smile at the end. So enjoy the car, and do what is best for it.

Here are some pics of my little one.

Sorting the noisy door check strap is an easy enough diy job. Just done it on mine in fact. Lever off the trim by the wing mirror and the trim by the inner door handle. Undo a bolt in the handle. The door card then lifts off in an upward direction. A bit of joggling and swearing may be necessary. Be careful not to break the clips which may be brittle with age.

I totally agree with what you said, and I dont want to mod it stupid, I am 35 not 18!
You have a stunning looking car there, and something I would aspire to.
I want to keep it as original as possible with a modern twist to it, such as slightly lowered, proper alloys and a decent interior but that would probably be as far as it goes, after all its a modern classic, why ruin it!

We clearly studied the art of engineering from the same expert sources!

Yes, my BA apprenticeship manual page one was as follows:

Step 1- use callibrated tapping stick p/n h-ammer-1,2 or 3 as required to remove stuck component.

Step 2- intoduce swearing p/n *****\€~-1 after 10 minutes.

Step 3- move to crew room for a cuppa tea while somebody else repeats steps 1-3.

Never fails ! :)

That's my problem Stumpy! I obviously introduce swearing too early in the process (volume might be an issue too?).

You are clearly a much more patient man than I am. ;)

I guess much depends on who the "somebody else" is who then does part 2?
