I just got my SLK back from the bodyshop, it had some light swirl marks from the G3 compound they used so over the last week, Ive gone over it with Meguires Ultimate compound which is much milder than the G3 & then Meguires Ultimate polish & topped it off with Meguires NXT wax. It looks fantastic now & I want to keep it like that so is there anything I can use that's going to protect the finish from light scratches, bird poo & road kill (dead flies). Do I just keep putting wax on top of wax & build it up or some other product?

Its the original Dark blue (Linerite) now with extra sparkle!

Thanks
Stu

Nothing that you can do more on this, with all bird poo, wash it off as soon as possible as it contains acids. It would not be the first time that I have been away from home and a bird has crapped on the car, and I have just bought a bottle of water to get it off, much cheaper than leaving it on to etch into the paint.

I wonder if you covered your car in seed and drove to the coast, left it covered in poo and all that etching. You might end up with an expensive matte finish ;)

Its not really possible to layer waxes as subsequent applications remove the previous layer. Best way is to use an acrylic "wax" sealant which can be layered. Then apply a top coat of cannuba wax for that wet look.

I suggest Carlack68

Wax to remove wax???? not so sure about that......a decent wash and polish, the OP seems to know what he is talking about there and then a good quality wax as a sealer (personally I never use polish sealers as they have a life on the car and can be difficult to remove), I use a mild wash Meguars gold class for instance and then re wax.....thats normally good enough for several months with just fortnightly washes, afer a while I may QD for a while before I re polish and wax again.......
Wax is the best sealer by far but by good a budget should be circa £50 from a quality supplier such as ultimate finish / performance motorcare etc......

Getting my car back from the body shop tomorrow and this sort of affects me.

How long after a respray can I leave it until I can put on a protective wax/sealant? This hot weather is due to break this week with thunderstorms and I'd like to do it before they arrive.

I sort of know what Im doing, Ive tried dozens if different products over the years but Im by no means an expert. Ive found the Meguires range really good & easy to apply/remove. I was wondering if something like whitenemesis suggested may be worth getting over a decent quality wax. I thought by adding wax ontop if wax I would be increasing the protection of the paintwork

The guy who painted my car was buffing it with G3 the day after it was painted & when I asked how soon I could polish it he said anytime.
I would take the advice of the bodyshop.

The new paint on a car does not dry it cures, there is an activator in the last coat that cures with heat, when you get it home just 2 days in the sun will be just fine

Had my AMG resprayed, and was told I could repolish & wax it straight away If I wanted though I wanted till it was washed for the first time after the new paint then I used Megs NXT, and a Nano sealant on the paint. Bird poo will already have done its damage to the paint if it has been allowed to dry, auto glym do bird poo wipes which I have in both my cars for the inevitable bombing from the local flying rats.

if you can find it try collinite 845 its a wax sealant hybrid lasts for around 3 months before you need to apply it again but it goes on real easy and buffs off with no problem.

I did the wifes Altea with it and she covers a lot of miles and flies have been a problem to get off but with this stuff just needs a simple wipe with a soapy mitt to get them off

Theres just so many good waxes to choose from. The Collinite stuff suonds good but I think Im going to try Dodo Juice Blue velvet or Supernatural first as they are available in small tester sizes, enough to do the car 3 or 4 times.

Here he is by the way...........Merlin!
These photos after the spray but before the polishing.

Colour coded the bumper lips, door handles & number plate plinth. Also added sill covers from a 2002 car & a bit of extra sparkle!

If it has been baked it is fine to wax it as soon as you like, baking crosshatches the polymers in the paint and it is then fully cured, Air drying you should allow at least a few weeks ..dependant on the weather, this type of weather the car will dry in a day if all part of it have got the sunshine..
And the harsh sun is much harder on the paintwork than the rain and snow..and waxing and bright sunlight can actually increase the amount of heat the paint work gets..
Tho most good waxes do have so called uv protection

Erm....that would mean in January - March, when paintwork is susceptible to the worst of conditions....it could take months???

I understood most car paintwork was baked in an oven for the purpose of curing....i have never heard the words...."yea mate keep it warm for a few days and it will be fine"..:D
