CLK 200 KOMP.A 2002 (1st Gen)
Evening all,

I've had a 2009 C-Class Estate CDI220 for 6 months, but have been compelled to give it to my wife. In return, she let me trade in her old Peugeot.

So I've picked up a 1st Gen (2002) CLK Kompressor. And this is where my questions start!

The registration indicates that it's a 200, but the numbers on the boot clearly state CLK 230 Kompressor. How can I establish for certain?

I immediately like the car a lot. It needs some tlc, but it's done less than 70k miles and has what appears to be a complete MB service history, (for better or for worse). My plan is to start with a serious service and investigation of the mechanicals and move onto aesthetics once I'm certain it's safe and sturdy. I currently know next to nothing about automotive mechanics and even less about MB, so this is going to be a steep learning curve and I'll be looking for recommendations for reliable garages and bodyshops in the East Sussex (through to Mid Sussex) area.

Nice to meet you all.

Ian

Hi and welcome. To determine what the car is look at the chassis number -something like WDB208332*********.
The bit we want is the 208 and following three numbers. That will tell us how the car left the factory.
The second thing to check is the engine. That will have a number like 111023*******. Again it's the 111 (and yours may not be 111) and following three numbers. That tells us exactly which engine is fitted.

The chassis number says it's a CLK200 kompressor. The engine number looks wrong - Iit should be 111 9xx.
111.944 says 200k, 111.974 says 230k.
Looks like someone may have swapped badges....

Thank you both.

Yes I suspected as much. I wonder why though.. more investigation required. In the meantime the car is booked in for a thorough going over.

It was "marketed" as a 230k, (private sale), but I ran the online checks on it and saw it come up as a 200k. To be honest, it would not have swayed me either way - I just wanted to be certain for repairs and parts and so on.

The car only cost about as much as insurance and fuel for it for ~6 months!

MBS in Southampton is a super Independent that shouldn't be too far from you . Always worth travelling to see the professionals who know your car

Southampton area is spoilt for choice, MBS near the Itchen Bridge and PCS in Horndean just off the M3 a little north of Southampton - MB owners in that area are lucky, I have 1 decent indie 8 miles from me, the next one is 30-45 minutes drive!

Depending where in East Sussex you are Ian, I believe there's an MB specialist just north of Tonbridge, Ashford is not too bad if you're near the Kent border.

For that you'd have to ask one of those idiots that insist on swapping their SL350 badge for an SL500 one or such like, they only impress schoolboys who don't know any better and certainly don't impress anyone when show needs to turn to go. :)
