SL55
Hi All,
Probably a cliche member, but I watched some videos of a dude in the states who bought a cheap SL55 and I thought.. "damn I wish I could do that!"

So I have joined your lovely forum and hope to maybe one day be a part of the community.

In the past I have owned a Mitsubishi GTO so I really love my big GT cars. Not afraid to do my own work, highlights for me:

Replaced heads and new belts etc. on the GTO.
Replaced pump and distribution valve of a Touareg Air suspension.
Refurbished the Touareg driveshaft after a center bearing failure.
Replaced the entire interior of a badly repaired cat D mondeo ST Diesel.
All servicing of every car I have owned, oils, breaks and all filters.

So not afraid to tackle anything to be honest.

Thanks for the welcome!
Equium

Welcome to the forum.
SL55 is a lovely car with a great engine. Have a good read up on the possible problems of ABC suspension and leaks into the boot.
An pre-inspection by someone who knows this model is a must.

Hi and welcome. Also read up about SBC though that's no longer the major cost it used to be.

Yeah for sure, I don't have a super car slush fund but i do ok :)

As I said "I wish..."

YOu never know! The biggest hurdle I have is convincing the wife to sell my current boring Mondeo (It was a practical choice ok) and replacing it with 2x cars. This one, and the one I will drive to work! :D

Ha, we had a boring Mundaneo and it was a quite a good car (20,000mls plus and never cost me a penny) bought an M Reg Escort after that and had the AA out 6 times in 6 months of owning it
However it's possible to own a SL55 if at some point you owned or own a Mondeo ;) :D

Haha true! I will probably miss the reliability no doubt. I was actually thinking of just getting something that was a lot smaller. Like a fiesta. I can't own two massive cars for sure.

Welcome to the forum. Have you thought about an SL500? Whilst the SL55 is a great car i think you will find an SL500 to match it 95% of the time for 50% of the cost. I looked at SL55's before i bought my SL500 and found that the 500 was all i needed.

So true, only when you go to over take in a 55 your in lose your license territory before you get passed especially in a 60 zone. The 500/55's are reliable as any other make, just depends on how lucky you are with the one you have ;)
Buying with full main dealer history means for diddly squat

Being able to do a side by side comparison what are your thoughts re SL500/SL55. My thoughts at the time were that apart from the wonderful exhaust note the SL55 didn't offer much more than an SL500, especially as my 500 has the AMG bodykit anyway.

In all honesty I can say that they are 2 totally different cars. Basically the body shell, axles, possibly the diff and glass appear the same, engine, gearbox, suspension, subframes, interior and electrics are different in comparison and buying parts. ;) The 500 is like a caring lovely person, the 55 is a bad arse devil in every respect :D

Oh forgot to mention the brakes are totally different too...Another way of putting it is the 500 is like sleeping on Grandma's feather bed and 55 is sleeping on a bed of nails :geek:
