Hi
Thought I might introduce myself, My name is John and I have now owned a 97 E300 TD estate for 2 months and I love it, but just a query, do any other owners out there suffer from a drumming/droning what feels like descending in an aircraft at speeds over 70, I have tried different heater settings but the only thing that gets rid of it is to open the window. I will also be using her for towing the family caravan, is it necessary to fit an oil cooler or not.
Thanks on advance for any advice
John.............why didnt I buy one before

Hi Pete
The Dogs are Tervuerens one of four types of Belgian Shepherds, they came into this country in the early 70s but are still quite rare which is hard to understand as they have really good temperaments and are very loyal, on the other hand unfortunately, I think the whole breed share the only brain cell so that may explain it
On the subject of the noise its more like the feeling you get when driving with one rear window open, I have checked all the seals so I am wondering if its common with the estate given the amount of space inside, perhaps I'm being a bit fussy?
In all other respects I love the car, its a delight to drive and I can live quite easily with the 40mpg

Hi John.

Welcome to the forum!

As a fellow Belgian owner (Groenendael - and our third) I can vouch for how good the Merc is for transporting them!
Marvellous dogs, our GSD can't compare poor girl, and the Belgians were all rescues. Sadly the first two succumbed to cancer when 12/13.
Back to your question:

Your noise sounds like the effect you get when the sunroof is open and the 'spoiler' is lowered (the little flap at the front od the sunroof openeing).
The fact that opening the window stops the noise does tend to suggest a venting issue. Or is it just masking the sound?

Are there vents in the rear of '97 T's? You may want to check these.
