Yes it's normal.
There is a pawl in the gearbox that drops into a notch on the output shaft. The movement is just the pawl dropping in a notch, free play in the transmission, flex in the suspension bushes and clearance around the pawl in the notch.

Once parked up the pawl is under stress. This is why it can sometimes release with a bang and is sometimes difficult to release.

It is not good practise to only use the P position to hold the car on a hill, especially on a slippery surface.

So is this doing damage ?
Can’t bear the thought of this doing damage
I should really just get the foot brake fixed as it is still under warranty

Just to add....
Parking pawls do fail from time to time (and if they do the pieces can cause serious damage).
Additionally a slight shunt when someone touch parks can cause the pawl to disengage and once the car is in motion may not re-engage or if the shunt is harder can cause the pawl to break.

There is not much holding the vehicle stationary.

Hello all
Foot brake all done
On another note is the chrome trim around the windows metal or plastic?
I’m only asking as it’s looking a bit dull and stained and was wondering what’s best to buy

I’ve cleaned that off in the past using lemon juice, just have to make sure to get some sealant like wax on straight afterwards or it will stain worse! It’s not pure chrome as you can strip off to the black underneath

Didn’t think of that I was looking for something you can buy from a car cleaning company like autoglym

You could use autoglym polish to clean it up and give it a shine

I’ve tried car polish blobcat but it’s not touched it
I was more thinking if autoglym or a company make a chrome car trim cleaner
So I take it it’s plastic and not metal?

@Morethanpolish do a product called ‘hindsight’ too - never used it but might be worth a try
The Chrome is a ‘metal’ of sorts an anodised product

Hello everyone
Just a quick question
It sounds a bit a a daft one to ask but when I had my gear box service done a couple of weeks back the stop start has stopped working
Can this happen or is it just pure coincidence or is the car just not up to the right environment ?
I.e battery not got enough charge or the outside temperature not warm enough for the stop start to work ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

Coincidence .

Main battery starts your car without issue , but is slightly below par , so SS has thankfully stopped working .

Thought is was coincidence but it started at the same time as the service so thought I’d ask

Could just be that the battery got a bit drained while they were doing the service (a lot of restarting the engine or leaving the car with the ignition on) and the S/S will be back in action once the battery has recovered?

I know not many people are a fan of stop start but it’s just the thought that the car is not doing what its supposed too
It just bugs me a little
Car is running great but was just interested about the service and the s/s not working

Hello AMGeed
The brake just doesn’t stay down and the release pull is lose you can pull it but it just stays out
The hand break light comes on the dash but when you take your foot off it just comes back up

Sounds like the cables is not connected to the arm in the handbrake or similar , you would need to take the rear wheels off and start by checking hand brake , and I think there’s a adjuster in centre of car near the rear where both cables meet check this as this is a Rachet type bracket might not be working , remember to use axle stands if gettin in below to check handbrake cable adjuster. I had photos of the one on my e class in one of my threads I think. Personally I think it’s the ratchet under the rear of car , might be seized , you can adjust the shoes though a hole in the disc without taking disc off with a screwdriver if you turn disc to the right location to where you can get on the adjuster to adjust up a tooth or down a tooth.
