Would any one know why the new tyres have the red dot on the sidewall?
And has anyone else had new tyres with this little red dotl ?
If you have the red dot should be next to the tyre valve .
So now,, those who have had new tyre in the last year or so check this red dot and see where it is .

No red dots on my new Goodyears. I thought if there was a dot it had to be the opposite side to the valve.

Newish tyres on most of mine - some with and some without. Of the ones with dots the red seems to be @ 90deg anti-CW from the tyre valve 2 different fitters also (local garage and also Tyre garage).

The Red dot usually indicates a high spot on the tyre

Yellow spots indicate the light part of the tyre and should be mounted next to the valve

... and should be mounted next to the valve

.... as a starting point. MB fitted me two tyres years ago. They were surprised when I took the car back to them to re-balance one of them as it'd been fitted using a 105g pile of balance weights. The fitter actually came out & asked what my problem was as in the past he'd used up too 200g to balance. Not on my car I said .... move the tyre around the rim & have another go. He eventually came back rather pleased with himself after having used just 20/30g .... he should've perhaps done that in the 1st place.

I had a similar discussion when I last had my tyres fitted. The young lad was up for an argument with me until the senior person came over and looked at the number of weights he’d added... The young lad then had some more on the job training...;)

That's what got me about the 'tech' at MB .... he was in his 50s (like me o_O) so should've known better

I had a full set of Michelin PS4 tyres fitted 6 months ago on the drive which allowed time to talk to the fitter, when I queried why one tyre had a red dot he confirmed it should be 180 degrees to the valve - out of interest I’ll have a look at how many weights ended up on that wheel

I had this discussion with a fitter at Costco, where they proudly display all their "Michelin trained" certifcated.

He was admant that the dots don't matter. He said it was an issue with steel wheels but alloys should be balanced from new and they won't change so it doesn't matter where the tyre is in relation to the valve. He was also adamant that the coloured bands around the tyre are nothing to do with runout, although he did indulge me by fitting them as I asked.

I happened to be in a Honda dealer recently and I noticed every car in the showroom had the red dot exactly in line with the valve. Which itself is a bit odd, as like jbell mentioned it's supposed to be a yellow dot next to the valve.

Yellow is supposed to be weight and red uniformity. Yet one article I read (which has the same text as is often repeated in many places) says that if the tyre has both, align the red dot with the valve!

I too had the same discussion in Costco, not with the fitter, but his manager who said he'd been to numerous training courses with Michelin and the red & yellow dots and all the lines around the tread meant nothing. Never been back for tyres.

The dots are there for the tyre fitter .I bet if anyone on the forum has had new tyres fitted , that this red dot will be in any part on the tyres , and not by the valve .
