Hi!
My name is Niall, an Irishman living in Norway. New to the site and a proud owner of a '98 W202 C200.. Picked it up yesterday and enjoying getting to know it. Really impressed so far:D

its got 160,000km but doesn't look or feel like it. Actually smells like a new car inside! FSH and one owner. I hope I can look after it as well as the previous owners did

Welcome and congrats on your purchase, personally quite fond of the C Class. Having just spend the last 2 months repairing a 98 C180 for a pennyless customer has given me the chance to learn a lot about Mercedes.

There has also been a wealth of technical advice available from members on this site so should you have any questions about you car then just ask.

Things to look for on your car, head gasket oil leak, nothing drastic and you could leave it well alone it your happy with a little oil on the font on the engine, MB revised the head gasket due to the oil ways from block to head being close to the front of the engine, over time the finds its way to the front corners and seeps a little, but like I said nothing to worry about.

MAF failure but £45 for a new one off ebay, coil packs £25 (ebay)

Other than that great little car.

Welcolme,

I am sure you will enjoy your C, my first was a C Class, sold it to a friend four years ago and still see it around.

Apart from a battery and the odd tyre hasn't cost him a penny and still looks almost new.

Very best of luck!

Thanks for the great welcome!!
I think Niall comes from the old viking name Nils! maybe there is some old viking blood in us!!
While out drooling at the car at lunch time I sadly noticed that the front left spring\coil is broken :( I'm, a bit of a backyard mechanic so I'm planning to do it myself. They are fairly heafty springs. I was wondering if a "normal" spring compression tool was up to the job?

Re the springs, only replace them in pairs, and do get MB springs, they are not expensive. there is lots of info on changing them on this site, do a search. There a certain type recommended for the springs, take care they can be lethal but OK with the right tool

The springs need to be clamped internally, MB have a special tool for the job, sealey also sell a tool that works well enough to remove and replace them.
Personally I would find someone that can do it and let them do the job, buy the coils from a MB dealer my CL front springs where £80 each, yours should be cheaper.

If you havent done a coil change before then best let it be done by someone that has, a coil spring that lets go from the clamp is a deadly!!!!!

We have a car club at my workplace and they actually had the proper MB tool for the job. Getting a buddy to give me a hand, luckily he's done it before. It should go fine I hope:D

Well I got them changed. It was tricky enough! Scary stuff those springs. Back ones look a bit tired, but I'll get a local indie to do that. Save me having nightmares about springs again;)
Thanks for all the advice guys!
