I've just picked up my clk320 which is fantastic, however I am not sure if there is a problem on it or not (being new to auto boxes and that!)

Whenever I slowly approach a set of light, just before (or as I come to a stop) there is a clunk noise, almost as if something is disengaging. Is this normal with an auto box, does it stick it in neutral or something ?? and if so, should I be able to hear it. There is no problems with the box operationally, just wondered if it is meant to do this ?

Thanks

ben.

Mine did this for while after the oil had been changed and the battery had been disconnected and was also very rough 1st -2nd when cold, after a few miles (quite a few) it seemed to settle down, so i put it down to gearbox adaptation, this was over 18mths ago and all is fine with it now.

Your Mercedes
nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
You dont say the year or if its 4 or 5 speed, but there should be next to no intrusion to your enjoyment from the transmission. It may just be that the box is changing down (as it will when road speed falls) and there is some slack in the propshaft or other part of the drive line that is taken up by the torque change.
Get the prop shaft couplings and centre bearing checked for wear and ensure that the engine and gearbox mounts are in good order. When my engine mounts and propshaft were serviced and the rubber bits all replaced it felt like driving a different car, well worth the 300 dabs it cost to do.
It is essential that you change the transmission fluid and filter at the specified intervals, depending on transmission type the fluid used maybe an MB only product.
Find yourself a good indie with experience of your model and save on servicing costs, there is some info on this site about the indies.
