Hi

I am new to the forum but in the limited time I have been a member found it very informative.

I am looking at purchasing an E class estate, this is more governed by the size of the boot for my three dogs!!

I was originally interested in a E270 or E280 but they do not appear so many on the second hand market. I am now thinking of the E220 or E320 - the latter for performance and seemingly reasonable mpg. However, I would be interested from members actual experiences of fuel consumption.

The other question I have is what is the difference between the E320 EU3 and EU4? Of the E320 engines of late there seem to be quite a few different types which offers the best performance.

Budget wise I would be looking at a 04/54 possibly 05 plate.

Many thanks in anticipation for your help.

James

Rough figures based on my old commute were 36mpg for an E320cdi and 40.5mpg for my E270. When out in convoy with the old man, my 270cdi is roughly 1mpg down on his E220cdi so not much in it.

If you could hold out for a V6 320 (you're close) then you get better economy and better performance (and vastly better refinement too). A friend reports 45+ from his V6, whereas I seem to be struggling to top 39 at the moment! Some of this may be down to the way the trip computer works though.

Thanks for that - when you say hold out for the v6 320 I thought they were all V6's?

I am in between the 04 and 05 which seems to be when the engine changed from 3.2 to 3.0? Do the 3.2 have 5 gears and the 3.0 7 gears and thus more frugal?

I have seen a 320 05 plate advertised - EU04 7 speed 220bhp - there seems to be a 204bhp as well. I am tempted by the 220bhp but rather confused with all these engine changes!!
