Newbie needs help

Hi all, I am looking for an A class as a 2nd car and have no experience of these cars at all. I have seen a couple of the "Evolution" models and really like the look. But is there anything to look out for in particular and is there a better option I may be missing?
Also what are the service costs? are they high?
