Morning all,

Just defected from the M3 camp and bought myself a 1996 C36 and got a question already. Am I correct in saying the traction control is not switchable on these i.e. it is on all the time? If not where is the switch for it? My local Merc garage seems to think there should be a button on the dash, above or below the stereo but there isn't. Anyone got any clues?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

You poor fellow. Your first outing to a Merc dealer and you have encountered the one who does not know about Mercs [its ok, in Ireland 90% of them dont know about them].

Go back to the M3 double quick [yes..I know... the Merc is great to drive etc] because when you need to know where that button is or isn't on the dash it'll be a wet Friday evening on the hard shoulder.

Hi Chris,

I came from an Audi A4 2.8Q and so very nearly bought an M3 Evo...but got a 1997 C36 instead :) Right now for the good/bad news (depending on how you look at it).

If your car came fitted with ESP/ASR etc then you would indeed find button(s) above the heater controls next to the door lock marked accordingly. However, no button(s) means neither are fitted  (I think).

I bought my car in July last year and thought for about 20 minutes that the large yellow triangle in the dash meant the TC was operating. Mind you, after lighting up the tyres on the way out of Basingstoke (on a dry road :p ) I realised that my car didn't have it LOL

So...there you go...you just have to be very frugal with the loud pedal! (not easy for me since 4-wheel drive was just wonderful...still managed to spin it though LOL)

Hope that helps!

Simon

Thanks for the replies guys.

I think you must be right Simon about there being a lack of traction control in that I pulled out of a junction rather swiftly only to be greeted with smoke pouring off the rear tyres but still had the triangle flashing on the dash! It either hasn't got traction or it is pretty useless anyway.

The car seems a lot easier to live with than the M3 especially as it is right hand drive as opposed to the LHD of my e30 M3 and it will still take a corner when you need it to!
