I think it's because the auto you have to rev to make it move in any gear and catch whereas the manual is in your control and responds straight away

Having such a big car feels nice in auto but I just wish they were as good as the BMW zf 8speed gearboxes
The Mercedes 9G box is way better than the BM box. (I’ve had both)

I've driven both too, the 9g box is very much like the ZF 8speed, but in the 9g u cannot feel the shift at all so yes it's smoother ! Maybe the 7g was the same but with time, mileage and wear all the 7g boxes become laggy and jerky

No, the 7G always has had noticeable changes. 7G+ better but you still know the changes. ATF changes every 40k miles makes it better and is good long term maintenance

Good description and spot on, the 8 speed ZF box on my 4 series is an absolute delight however MB have done a good job with their 9 speed unit

Any idea why the facelift e250 CDI gearbox is so much faster and lowere redline 4200rpm compared to prefacelift which is red line 4600rpm and very slow ?
Watch this vide below, unbelievable how fast it is compared to prefacelift gearbox

I wish my C250 CDI was like that , must have the lazy high rever .

Why do they program a TCU to change at 4600 / 4700 when peak power is around 4200 ??

They should just leave the 4700 for 7th .

Ok so after Lots of motorway driving at steady 65-70 mph from a full tank I got 520miles to the light which is brilliant and then after some local miles light came on very quick

I just done 570miles to 55.9 litres = 46.3mpg
90% motorway miles

Over 2200 miles it's showing 44.8mpg
Thats at 70mph motorway cruises and some A roads
But all gentle stuff, no enjoyment
Minute I start booting it, fuel just vanishes

Still sounds normal MPG to me, my 350 has averaged 43.1 over the last 18k miles, but a local runs I can normally see low to mid 30’s and that’s with keeping to the limit

43.1 mpg !?
****** amazing mate! So how many miles do you get to a tank ? I'm sure it's like 80litre in yours,so I guess about 650 to the light
I would have got a e350 if they're that good on fuel . What's the point getting a 2.1td when you can get a 3 litre that does the same!!!
Locally I get 25-28 going around city centre
50+ on motorway
Just arrived at work showing 53mpg
So far it's done 450miles from approx 51 itres

I'm seriously going to look into getting e350 maybe after seeing so many good mpg reports

To be honest I take little notice of how much I get to a tank. It gets filled when needed and I just enjoy the car.

Just to add my halfpenneth - I never see more than 40mpg from my 12 plate E350cdi estate 265bhp, average is about 33mpg, motorway 40mpg, so what you are seeing with your 250cdi is about right

My brother in his e250 is like you..twice he's ran out of fuel haha cz he's a lazy ass
Engine management came on due to "low pressure fuel pump"

Ye I suppose 40mpg is good for E350 but if really tried bet you could get 50 mpg on motorway

When I Sam super careful I can get about 54ish
But as soon an I get home and stop at lights etc and uphill then drops to 48ish

Funny thing is takes ages going up and but just DROPS if you press it for few sec

Never run out of fuel me, but I always know how much I’ll need to do a journey and fill up at the start if I know I haven’t got enough to cover it.
I can get 50+ mpg if I really try but it’s mind numbingly boring, 56mph sat behind wagons, feather the throttle and react very early by lifting off not to touch the brakes. Not for me I’m afraid, I like to push on and just enough the car, it’s a load lugger in comfort and wouldn’t have it any other way. My last car for my sins was a Peugeot 508 RXH (hybrid) and in around the same amount of miles that only managed and average of 57mpg, that said it was a nice car but just not the same comfort as my Mercedes.

+1 for the 250 CDI 60+ mpg club and @ a more rubbish average speed with mixed driving !

2019-02-15 20.36.34.jpg

But you'll have an extra turbo , more BHP and way more torque on tap than a 320d .

Well done! Good mpg, must've been a very flat drive

On tap these gearboxes are too slow, but once they are in the rev range they do pickup well and very torquey! Wish it had a zf 8 speed box, would be perfect

Anyway know if it is safe to remap om651 engine as it is a single row chain ? I've been told by one tuner that he wouldn't risk it or he would jus tune it very mildly to gain 10hp as the Chains are a massive weak point :(
