Hi,

Just closed the deal for my 1997 SL320 with 68000 miles and Full main dealer service history.

Looking to pick the car up in 10 days time.

Looking for any advice on owning and maintaining the car. Also what about the softtop. Never had one before. How is this maintained? Does the plastic insert crease?

Car has just been main dealer serviced. Should I continue this, having tried to negociate a rate with a main dealer, or does anyone know a specialist who can stamp the book in central Scotland.
Any help or advice appreiciated.

Looking forward to SL Ownership.

Hi & Welcome,

Some members recommend putting a tea towel over the window to stop it creasing.

Re the soft top. the MB water proofer and cleaner is good at £23, the plastic windows can be made like new with a plastic polish. To look after the windows do not fold it down in cold conditions.

I had one for 2 years, and very nice they are.

Welcome to the forum, many should answer. Malcolm

I would recommedn you dont use the softop under 10 degree C as this can crease the window and its £300 to replace properly.

if you put a tea towel on it you run this risk of trapping grit and scratching it as it slideds about when you close the roof.

The car is great if you want any help with it the people here will make you life a lot easier.

I have a 1999 SL320 and am in Scotland also. Have not found the main dealers too expensive for maintainence to date. There are lots of good products for cleaning the plastic window on the net

Hindsight is probably the best though is time-consuming to use - there's a little review here. With regard to the soft-top itself then Renovo or Autoglym make excellent products.

If you're going to store the roof for a period of time (i.e hard-top on) then wipe the Wovapin windows with soapy water and layer bubble wrap between the sections. Don't ever put the canvas roof away when wet.

ON the servicing side of things, I would stick to dealer servicing but ask for a discount first! I have mine looked after by Robinsons in Norwich and get a great discount from them. If you don't ask, you don't get.

I hope you love yours as much as I do mine. It's just a lovely car to drive and own.

Western Mercedes in Edinburgh and have also used John R Weir in Grangemouth - both very good. I did get on well with one of the service chaps at Westerns and got bit off but he has left now. There are independant places but not really any "mercedes specialists" so it is sometimes cheaper to go to the main dealer as they usually know exactly what the problem is

Not really, the price is about right for a main dealer. The one at £29k may be a bit OTT even with only 20k miles.

I saw that one, it was at MB Cheltenham I believe. Glad it's gone as I may have had to go and see it and get my wallet out!
