53 reg 270 CDI. When I start the car, hot or cold weather, it is fine and tics over well. When eng cold, if I put it in gear, it stalls in either Drive or Reverse; If I wait a few mins, it is o.k. but sounds as if it is trying to stall (eng Labours). Once it is driving it goes well but in 4th, at speed, if I apply power when going uphill it seems less willing to accelerate unless I give it more welly – not ideal; sort of fells like clutch slip on a manual???
When 1st starting, If I throw in into gear when cold there is a clunk as it engages, or more of one than I remember ( might just be me being paranoid).
Loads of explanations and none that I understand elsewhere and no other problems exactly the same as mine; any other little tips would be most helpful until I go to the money eating dealer, cap in hand!!!

Sounds suspiciously like a MAF failure to me. With an engine low on power as you describe, - engaging drive or reverse introduces a load on the poorly performing engine which then stalls it.

You describe a clunk as you select drive. Are you applying any throttle when you do so in order to prevent it stalling? This would cause the clunk.

Anyway MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor, it's an easy fix for any DIYer.

To diagnose, locate the MAF, disconnect it and see if there is any difference in the cars performance. If no different, that's your fault.

Chris.

Welcome to the forum, I am not good with diesels but it does sound like a fueling issue and I would unplug the MAF and try the car, or replace the MAF its at the end of the air intake box

Thank you for your help, would you know of any pictures to show me where the MAF might be - or which end of the air box (actualy where is the air box as well), the under side of the bonnet scares the bejeebers out of me!!!

Sone have mentioned the Tq converter as the car runs fine when warm?

Thanks again
