Hi,
Firstly i want to say a thank you to everyone who has posted little bits of knowledge regarding the w129 sl. I’ve been procrastinating for 2 years now and have finally taken the plunge and actually bought a 1993 500sl. All I can say is why did I wait so long, it’s a cracking car. “****** fast........”
The car has main dealer service history and just hit 98k, there are a few things i want to sort out over the coming months. I’m sure reading this you will thinks it’s a nail, it’s not just I’m extremely picky. If there is any advice you can give me it would be gratefully received.

1, Tracking is slightly out, but no noticeable play in steering. I was thinking kwik fit or similar.

2, slight seepage on what I think is the steering damper but can’t be sure yet as i haven’t got a manual.

3, Buy manual.... which one?

4, At idle a very slight lump about 1 every 20 seconds or so. Is this normal or just me? HT leads???

5, Very slight seepage on front of engine, i think the rocker cover seal right bank. “i love that my car has 2 banks of cylinders” small things I know!!! I’m pretty handy and have done head gaskets on Astras etc. Is this job for an Indi or give it ago myself.

6, Windows don’t drop when opening door with hard top or soft. They operate normally via switches. I did see a post reference re-syncing. I’ll give this a shot when the snow stops!!!

7, Drivers door storage bin, glove box? Lid is slightly loose. If I need to take the door cards off is this a big job or fairly straight forward.

8, Passenger wing mirror glass very slightly loose and when adjusting moves then clicks, Does this just needs stripping and re-assembling or is it replacement time.

I’ll post some photos of the car as whole and problem areas when the snow stops. As I’m hoping Television will give me some hints and i know VIN numbers are usually asked I’ve listed them below. When I’ve one the jobs I’ll post pics of the process for future reference.

P.S I live in the west midlands area, and look forward to seeing some of you over the coming months at meets..

Cheers, Mike - Mycos :D

Best done on a 4 wheel set up

You can do it your self

windows do not drop on a pre 1995 car

7, Drivers door storage bin, glove box? Lid is slightly loose. If I need to take the door cards off is this a big job or fairly straight forward.

I can send details

Great choice of car, would buy one in a heartbeat if I didn't already have another 2 seater convertible. One of my favourite Mercs, ever.

Hi Mike,

What a beauty. I can't imagine that such a well presented car has ever been neglected mechanically, so hopefully any problems will be little ones.

I am in the West Midlands too, so we can't be that far apart.

Job 8, Status = Complete.

I'm happy to say I've repaired my wobbly wingmirrors and it didn't cost a penny. The mirror was not connected to follower (item 38 see link below) and just hanging off the adjuster stalks

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...364722.620&CT=F&cat=515&SID=72&SGR=120&SGN=06

How i did it (not necessarily correct method)
1, Remove front and rear plastic casing using plastic panel removing tools to avoid scratching paint.
- Clean and left for reassembly later
2, Using the control stalk within the car set both the horizontal and vertical adjuster stalks on the mirror to their most outer limit (important so not to damage internal cogs / racks)
3, Again using plastic panel tooling pop the balls out of the mirror backing, mirror should be handing by the heating element cable (item 41 / 32)
4, Clean item 38 and where it clips to both the motor until and mirror (white grease all joints)
5, Using stalk within the car set all adjust stalks at their most inner limit.
6, Align mirror glass and push onto the adjuster stalk balls first then the centre onto the follower, this took some confidence as it doesn't feel right putting that much force onto the glass,
7, You should get a pop as it clicks in.
8, While the covers are off fold the mirror unit forwards and backwards whilst adding white grease to all moving parts.
9 Re-assemble the casing and set mirrors as desired.

There are video clips on the forum detailing how to remove the mirror casing, hope this helps and could process would be very similar if replacing broken glass.

The above worked for me but i can't take responsibility for it being correct, if anyone notes any errors please feel free to modify.
