At long last I have stalked this most rare of beasts..
(Latin name Radiator Nonexistencus)..
I had to stay awake into the small hours of the morning for it to emerge from its Lair...
Then I took my chance and hope the flash would not scare it away..
My evidence dear readers is here for you to behold...

Ah the lesser spotted mini rad and wiggly pipe....

Anyone got Attenborough's number?

That's exactly the same as in my late 2004 (facelift) C270CDi, and the little radiator is the one that is sometimes described as "low temperature radiator". Those soft rubber pipes attached to it that disappear into the engine surely cannot carry ATF.

If it is what I think it is, then there's a description on the Behr page under "Charge air cooler" of how it works: http://www.behrgroup.com/Internet/b...37AF8C12571F400254336?open&qm=leftmenu1,4,1,2

I can't copy the pages from the Russian site as you are showing (seems to run as Flash or something for me) but here's the description I see in the Radiator section for 203.016 (C270CDi):

22 A 203 501 01 01 KUEHLER NT
LOW TEMPERATURE RADIATOR

the rubber tubes attached are fairly thin, and soft, tubes - like the sort of thing you'd see being used for windscreen washer fluid, not something vital like ATF.

Hydraulic pipes for the ATF are of the same construction as the pipes used for the power steering and must be getting on for 20mm in diameter

I suppose I could disconnect one of the pipes that goes to / comes from the Little radiator and collect a few drops of the fluid..
If its red then I suppose it must me ATF fluid..

Hang on a minute though... What colour is Power steering fluid ?

...or you could as IBW has already done and reported to us, take the cover off the engine and follow the pipes to their origin.

Yes all you guys out there must follow the pipes, no other way. I have trawled through hundreds of papers, and that is doing no good at all, on WIS it looks as though the problem was never there

...as he has just taken one to bits he's pretty well qualified...

He does point out there are many variations though. I'm thinking the one in the C Class at least, as pictured at the start of this thread, really is an ATF cooler. It's just that I would have expected more substantial tubes to be connected to it, and it's also pretty small in area.

I'll vote for an ATF cooler too.

There was one in Mrs Seeker's (now long gone) Audi cab.

Looking at that small rad again from the pictures, that is water cooling, no oil fuild pipes would use the standard water hoses shown in them photos!!
