ok going to have to replace my tires and have a B service as well, due to lots of other things at home we are very short of money at the moment so budget tires are about the only option (apart from remoulds, but that isn't a route i will touch). Have found some Nexen tires which are reasonable and will do until we have some cash and will go back to conti's. Anyway has anyone used these before and what are your thoughts?

site i have fount them on :)

Older Citroen Now :-(
They seem a nice compromise to me..
Fairly quiet..
Decent wet grip and decent fuel economy..
To be honest if you are not a boy racer then I think they are fine..
I was a Kumho fan but I notice the prices for them are going up and up lately..

yes i was looking at kumho and at £15-£20 per corner more i couldn't see where the difference was apart from the name. I'm not really a boy racer anymore just like my quiet and comfort these days :)

Kumho seem to have bought some market share and are now pushing their rates up, good tyres though.

A mate has put nexen on his Audi a4 and seems to rate them, he drives like a nutter too!

Thanks Ricardo and Simon, i'm very supprised at these Nexen tires (not go them yet but have found a couple of people at work that have them) and they seem to have some really good reviews, they seem to be more like a mid range tire than a budget but without the price tag :)

I am really interested in trying these, I have never checked how tyres affect economy. Just out of interest the Bridgestone that I can get has a F fuel rating but the Nexen C, how much difference would this really make? Or would it be better paying extra for Goodyear which has a B rating? It's a mind field!

from my understanding it does make a bit of difference, my current shoes have a rating of E and i only get about 42-43MPG on a good run, putting these on should get up to about 45 if inflated with Nitrogen, but until i start running them i can't tell. it will be interesting to see how long they will last as i've only had my last set for about 22k.

Used to have a C63...
Keep us posted if you do go for them!

Got newish Conti on the 219 and they do seem to produce a little more road noise than the Nokians on the old 203 (granted, a bit wider and lower profile).

Conti seem to grip well but always keen to see what else is worth a look!

With nitrogen? How do you do that and how much does it cost? Also how would you top them up if the pressure drops? Thanks

Some tyre firms use this,as less pressure change with speed/heat, you just use air to top up

quite a few of the bigger firms now offer this service, its included in the price of premium tires, if you want to do it your self then i think it costs about £15-£20, i have heard that it does make a small difference to road noise as well but not sure if that is true or not?

As air is approx 80% nitrogen anyway any "improvements" are like to be insignificant.

that is a good point, tbh i had forgotten that, will be interesting to see how much benifit there will be.

found this which gives a good breakdown
composition of air in percent by volume, at sea level at 15°C and 101325 Pa.
Nitrogen -- N2 -- 78.084%
Oxygen -- O2 -- 20.9476%
Argon -- Ar -- 0.934%
Carbon Dioxide -- CO2 -- 0.0314%

Have been using Nexen 235/65/17 on my ML for 36000km now. Half worn at most and no problems with grip or ride - I don't drive like it is stolen. Only issue I have had is noise. The ones I am using are mono-directional and also have a V pattern. They do howl a bit on smooth tarmac. Not unacceptable but noticeable. I'm sure they have new ones out now that are not directional and not noisy. Good value tyres, I think. Why pay for "advertising", which is where the extra cost comes from on high profile brands?.

Thanks Oigle, that was what i was looking for some real world experiance. The ones i'm looking at are not directional so should be ok and as for you doing 36000km now on that set it does seem they will last a good amount of time too.

Especially as they were on an ML! That's good mileage on a heavy 4x4.

Oxygen molecules are smaller than nitrogen so they tend to leech through the tyre wall causing a loss of pressure.
Also 'air' contains a lot of moisture which can lead to corrosion of the wheel though not really a valid point with modern wheels and the length of time they are kept.
Filling with nitrogen does keep the pressure more constant for a longer period though personally I'm happy to check my pressures regularly anyway

A high percentage of that mileage was done towing a 1600kg van too. Because of the towing, tread noise and mono-directional properties of the tyre, I have rotated them F to R every 10000km. They are wearing well. Run them at 32psi - same as standard 255's. When towing, I run 34 in back as my van has a high ball weight.
The last lot of tyres I used were Yokohamas and they did 70K before I replaced them - still had usable tread left. New Yokos were $350 each whereas the Nexens were $180. Yoko's were quieter.

Had Nexen on the rear (contis on front) of the CLS when I bought it. I have always been funny with tyres and wanted to keep them as M0 spec, so have been waiting for the Nexen to wear out so I can stick the correct contis on so all four match. Well, 10,000miles later and they are still less than half worn. SO I am very impressed. Previously I have only managed 8-10k miles out of contis on the rear of my cars. So for wear rate they are good. And in terms of the drive, I have not had any issues. Smooth and quiet. Having said all that I will still replace with contis when the time comes. I will then report back to let you know if any improvement, or the same.
