Guys, its not mine!

Last Triumph is a car fanatic who I met on the VZi forum.

I've posted a link here and hope that he might join us.

Hello gentlemen, I assume this is the best address for mercedes owners rather than the more familiar 'hi guys;' . just kidding.
Being a new member I thought I would share a few of my merc related memories from my distant past. I am the new owner of the car posted by my fantastic son who advised me through the protracted purchase of the car.
I was a petrol head before I new what the term meant and before I could afford a car. I have the distinction of incurring several motoring penalties at the age of fifteen when I bought a 1935 Hilman minx and was stopped by the police when me and my pals pushed it to my house having brought the traffic to a stop crossing the main road in Speke in south Liverpool.
I chose my early career by joining the RAF and was posted to Colgne in Germany where I fell in love with the Mercedes Benz cars, only in those days they were known as Daimler Benz and this was displayed on the radiator badge of my first car the 180 that was featured at the beginning of my sons' post. The following will kill the veteran enthusiasts amongst you.
In the early sixties the changes in staff and consequent repatriation of staff left quite a few cars abandoned on the various air bases around Germany. I became the owner (with full title) to a 1936 170v diesel and an ex military twin rear axle 220 staff car which I sold to a German civilian who worked on the base for 100 dm. If I only had that car now!!! I eventually bought my 1956 180 ponton which became the love of my life eventually replaced by my wife of 42 years. The car stayed in my ownership for many years and remained in my heart. My son worked for MB and following a visit to the Frankfurt plant presented me with a model of my original car. This was placed on the 'mantle piece' where it was seldom out of my sight.
The advent of the internet inspired my curiosity and I conducted a search to see if any pontons where still around. I couldnt believe the amount of cars that had survived. Min origina car was left hand drive and was undesirable on the UK second hand market by the time I came to sell it, hence I gave it to my cousin knowing it was going to an enthusiasts home. With encouragement and support from my son I decided to buy the car featured earlier and I have been inspired by the car. At the age of 67 all I wanted was something that I could run with the minimum of cost and maintenance and it is gratiying to know that unlike modern cars most of the maintenance work is within the scope of my son and my skills. I am looking forward to my ownership.

Hello and welcome.

Like you one of my sons has a passion for Beetles, and I have followed LTs agonies over his on Volkszone for years until it all became too much for him - the cost of being a perfectionist.

I look forward to you telling us about your new car, and as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I unfortunately and inadvertantly closed my post accidently before I had corrected my grammar and typo's. I neglected to say that I bought and owned a 1985 190d for 15 years and thought it was a fantastic car only marred by its' propensity to rust. I will post any developments with my Ponton which, having owned for 2 days, both my son and I have fallen in love with. I must admit that it has been quite a shock to drive this car and has certainly pressured me in to questioning my memories of my first ponton which I had thought to be the perfect drive. I have immediately ordered a set of radial (narrow whitewall) radial tyres to reduce the cars' desire to waltz around the corners. Ron
