I own a 300TE-24v. I had a lot of work done on the gearbox (722.501) about 18 months ago by Andy Gayles in Birmingham. A few probs have arisen.
1. ATF leak (pan appears to be leaking hopefully easy fix)
2. Jerky changes on warm up (sorted with ATF top up)
3. No kickdown.
4. No 5th gear (went at same time as kickdown)
5. When downshifting from 4th/D to stop there is a noticable thud (when the car has slowed right down). I can overcome this by changing into 3rd just before I stop. I does not happen when slowing down in 3rd.
Andy Gayles said that points 2 & 3 can all be sorted with a replacement valve body which they tested.
Question: does the 5th gear selection use the valve body, as it is an overdrive gear controlled by a solenoid?
Since Andy Gayles first did the work it has been back to him 3 times (and more cost each time). So before I spend more cash I want to get the opinion of the forum. I love my Merc and don't mind spending the money in the right places. The gearbox changes lovely when the ATF is topped up (apart from no 5th and the thud on the slowdown), but I want it as it should be.
Thx in advance
