the wife has a c180 avantgarde 2l auto 2000 x plate which she wants to sell as she is changing job so she is looking for a small diesel with cheap road tax better fuel economy etc she goes to a evans halshaw branch and asks about a pug 206 diesel that they had in stock and asks can she trade the merc down for it no probs says the salesman we can do that he checks the car over and then tells her that because its a merc their merc dealership will have to give a value for her car. which has only 65k on it sevice history and in good nick for its age. she didnt know wether to laugh or cry at this bit the valuation came back £2grand yes £2 grand and thats without buying the pug she would have to put the rest to buy that. she paid £8 grand for it 6 months ago. needless to say she wont be going back to evans halshaw again.can anyone beat that for depreciation 6 grand in 6 months.

"my wifes c180 has a noise like a midget with a hammer coming from the panel behind the radio it happens when you turn the ignition on lasts for aprox 2mins then stops heater blowers air con etc all work fine car runs fine this only happens when you start the car up you cant really hear it from under the bonnet so i know its not the engine which seems fine also its not effecting the car,s performance in any way anyone had this problem or knows whats causing it any advice welcome its a 2000 x reg by the way"

Isn't this what you added to another thread? Maybe they thought it was a big problem.

Whilst I have great sympathy for your plight, unfortunately anticipate that this is the norm these days, and will continue to be, but buy a big engined car, now and in the future, depreciation is big, big time, look at current E63 falling prices, horrendous! Cars, any sized engine, all will be continue to be screwed by the Government and the dealerships from every angle possible! But we all need or want one, so on it will continue, till when?

It has to be accepted that the car industry is having big problems, dealerships cannot sustain the amount of sales needed to keep them afloat, the other big worry is that there is a financial crisis looming, People have borrowed on the strength of their equity, which in most cases is their overvalued homes, if they are having problems paying mortgages, cars will not be purchased, and the government's new ved is gonna make bigger cars a luxury for those who can afford them. so the dealers are aware of this and they are now downpricing their future stocks, it has always been a buy low sell high market but the current impending crisis is making it more apparent, and dealers are being more blatant,, sell privately where possible, and at least you will know the value of ur car

I can't beat that, but we only had our last Merc for 8 months and when we traded it in we lost £5,000 which to us seemed a large amount to lose. The car was absolutely pristine and we hadn't done many miles in it. As other people say though it's how the market is and we just have to accept it. When we sold our Golf last week to go back to Mercedes we got £7,000 for it which was the same loss over a 2yr period as we had from the Mercedes in just 8mths :???:

Hello,

Private obviously the way to go but depreciation will be bad either way, always seems worse if you only have a car short time. New cars its really bad, what was that CL65 worth on a thread?.

I lost 7K on a new Freelander TD4 sport in a year that wasn't the greatest move I ever made, but then other cars have cost very little.

Whats the Glass's guide for your car?

ownling a car for 6 months will always result in a massive hit. Don't misread this for depreciation though. It isn't.
You went into a retailer and bought a car. The cost of that car included an allowance for preparation as well as the dealer profit. The moment you sign for the car, that money (around £3000 on a car like that one) has gone. When you come to trade it in, that, plus any depreciation that has occurred will be deducted and then on top, any anticipated depreciation they expect to incur whilst they hold the car.
Over 3-5 years, this money is lost in the overall depreciation but over 6 months it is by far the lions share of the drop. So, if you paid £8k six months ago, I'd expect the trade in offer to be in the 4-5k range, though probably closer to 4.

£2k is still a joke though. They are basically saying they don't want it and are hoping you'll sell it privately.

They are not called stealers for nothing, my SLK350 with only 5800 miles on it was quoted as worth 1k below bottom book by my local MB stealer and it is in mint condition no marks or chips I sold it for 5K more than they offered and I am no replacing it with a merc, its the jag XF.

and you think Jag will be any better?
Jag depreciation makes MB's look like a dream! I doubt the XF will be any better.

Lets face it NO new car really is any good.

A mundao (oooops Jag) will be just as bad as any Merc, thats just cars for you.

Best to enjoy them for what they are if you can afford them and not worry too much about what its actually costing.

Maybe leasing is the way to go for you, given you do so little miles? At least you know at the outset what its going to cost then just change it every 12 months, 24 months etc?

Enjoy the new jag they do look nice.

I agree with you on Jaguars in general but the experts What Car etc, give the XF higher residuals than both the E and 5 series. Anyone that has not driven one should if they are considering a medium size car it loads better than either the E or 5 it really is, I have tried every car in that bracket, sorry for going off topic.

Sadly, it's too early to view the residuals on the XF. Whilst I agree, if this were a fair world, the XF would have excellent residuals, despite producing some very good cars over the years, including the current XJ, Jags just traditionally don't hold their values against the German marques. The experts are right at present, but a lot of that is the 'new model' effect. 204s are holding well for the same reason. Give it a couple of years however....
Lets hope the XF bucks the trend. Its a very good car by all accounts and deserves to do well.
