Good morning all

A week or so ago I noticed the car was loosing boost intermittently. My immediate suspicion was a dirty MAF as I've had that on another C-class. It was manageable for a while as the car would reset if I stopped and re-started.

This week it's got much, much worse and there's almost no boost at all, certainly not above 2500 revs or so, and the only time I've been able to look under the bonnet in daylight there's a lot of black residue on the left side of the engine under the Air Filter housing and the oil separator. I also noticed some black smoke coming from this area (as if the exhaust was leaking) when I revved the engine in the drive. Restarting doesn't seem to have much effect.

Any clues as to what might be the fault and whether driving the car on short local journeys would do any more damage while I save up for the usual hefty repair bill?

All advice appreciated.

Blocked KAT, very common. Remove the top KAT. Take out the baffle. Remove the lower section and back flush it with a hose pipe. Should be fine afterward.

Excellent news. Thanks Steve.

I probably won't be able to get to this until the weekend - is it going to hurt the car if it's used for a couple of journeys to the gym and back (2x6 miles at less than 55mph)?

I had the same on my old C Class when I first got it. I pressure washed the insides similar to this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5JRmwiBd7g (but not on the nice clean patio tiles).

Getting the DPF can out was a struggle as the bolts were all pretty corroded. I think I tried from above and below, finally getting it out from above. Remember to put a paint line across any exhaust pipe joint that you split or rotate so you can put it all back exactly as it came out.

You also need to understand why it got blocked. In my case it was a failure of the dpf pressure sensor that sits behind the air filter housing. This little black box with 2 pipes coming out was around £40 from the stealer. The part has changed number many times over the years, the link is to show you what the part is, not to say get this one.

In the meantime I would avoid using the car if you can as there will be loads of back pressure in the exhaust system that may cause the turbo to play up. Why not cycle to the gym?

Thanks Paxti

I'll have a bash at getting the Cat off at the weekend. Hopefully I haven't fried the turbo yet.

Cycling to the gym isn't really an option - six miles is a long way for the missus to pedal with me on the back :p - we both go to the gym but we only have one bike.

Update

Asked my local Indy to have a gander as I'm short of time - second Cat is completely blocked - mostly by bits of the first Cat if I understand him correctly. Cat "removal" time and fingers crossed at next MoT in 11 months time. Will report back later.

wouldn't worry about the emissions test, I had my 270 decatted and it hardly made any difference to the emissions as long as the car is nice and warm before you take it there.

which Indy in Notts do you use btw?

as above , the emisions test for mot these days is a joke , a vehicle would have to be in pretty bad shape to fail it

Thanks Matty

I use Roger and Nathan at Mercserve on Radford Rd (near the old Shippo's brewery. Moved away 3 years ago and always regret it when I plump for the local non-specialists.

Yep know the place used them a couple of times but normally use MB Centre now as it's just easier for busses getting to and from work.

Know what you mean but the tram runs near them now so not too bad. Have used MB Centre in the past. Both well established now.
