first and obvious suspect is the potentiometer that adjusts the brightness - try moving it around

second suspect is a fuse - I believe there is one on the back of the instrument panel in addition to the fuse box

third suspect is the bulbs - once again you'll need the instrument panel out to check these.

Hi John.
I had a similar prob in my car. No dash lights at all eventhogh the headlamps and rear lights are working. I did what Andy had suggested i.e. potentiometer, fuse and bulb check. All was OK. Finally checked the main light switch (above the parking brake release handle). Fiddled with it a few times and light on dash all came on at once. The other thing you can check is whether the number plate lights are off when there are no lights on the dash. I think they are all connected together..at least that was what I observed on mine. When I did manage to get the dash lights working, the plate lights were on as usual. The prob was detected to a poor connection in the main light switch especially after switching on the front fog lamps (1 pull) and rear (2 pulls). Might be worth a try and see if that helps.

if it's the same as the W124 dash - the dashboard dimmer is the same control as the reset for the trip - have you tried turning that? prhaps you've dimmed it inadvertedly whilst resetting the trip meter.
