A couple of times this last week my W211 has requested that I check the oil level when next refueling. This unfortunately I have a big issue with as I have no dipstick and no menu option to check the oil level D'oh.

I know the no dipstick came up recently here
I have made it into the engineering mode as per Rory's advice. Unfortunately still no option for Oil and I appear to have reset the ASSYST at the same time. Double D'oh, I then cancelled that and went to 10K over due for a service. Sometimes I should just leave things...

So anyone know how to check the oil level on a face-lift W211 E320CDI?

Hope I've understood this problem correctly and ASSUMING...and it seems to be a big assume with merc models, that your 2006 E320 has the same steering buttons as my 2004 CLK, I've no pressing of dashboard reset buttons to do. The oil level check is in the steering arrow buttons, after the "miles to next service" position. The problem may then be, where do you like to run your dash indication? For example I run mine on the "after start" screen, displaying time, miles and mpg for the journey. From there I know now that it's 2 presses on the left hand overlapping screens button, followed by 3 presses on the left hand arrow button above. With ignition "on" that reads oil level. Then I back out of the screens in the opposite direction. Sounds complicated but it's instinctive now. If you can advise what screen you normally like to display from start up, then I can hopefully work the button presses out for you on mine.

If I've not grasped it properly then apologies.

Checking the engine oil level
Before checking the engine oil level the following conditions for the vehicle should be met:
  • It should be parked on level ground
  • The engine should be switched off for at least five minutes if the engine was at normal operating temperature
  • The engine should be switched off for at least 30 minutes if the engine was not at operating temperature (i.e. if you only started the engine briefly)
Via the on-board computer*

Checking the engine oil level on vehicles with an oil dipstick more.
Make sure that the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock more.
Press the or button to select the message Engine oil level Measuring now:
The measurement takes a few seconds. You will see one of the following messages in the display:
  • Engine oil level OK
  • Add 1.0 litre to reach maximum oil level
  • Add 1.5 litres to reach maximum oil level
  • Add 2.0 litres to reach maximum oil level
Top up the oil if necessary more.
Other messages in the multi-function display
If the engine is at normal operating temperature and there is too much oil, you will see the following message:
Engine oil level
Reduce oil level

Have excess oil siphoned off.

There is a risk of damage to the engine or the catalytic converter if there is excess oil in the engine.
If the message Switch ignition on to check engine oil level appears:
Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition lock more.
If the required waiting period was not observed, the following message appears: Observe waiting period
Repeat the measurement after about five minutes if the engine is at normal operating temperature.
Repeat the measurement after about 30 minutes if the engine is not at normal operating temperature (if the engine was only started briefly).
The following message appears if the engine is running:
Cannot check engine oil level with the engine on
Switch off the engine and wait for five minutes if the engine is at normal operating temperature, or for about 30 minutes if the engine is not at normal operating temperature (if the engine was only started briefly), before measuring.

If you wish to cancel the measurement, press the or button on the multi-function steering wheel

My previous E (W210) was as you describe. Up 2 IIRC on the top left button. My new E (W211) should be the same, however it isn't! There is no option for measuring the oil at all from the menu system.

I have RTFM :D page 240 and it is as you put above, doesn't alter that fact I don't have it :-(

I've spoken with the dealer and booked it in for a service on the 19th. It was showing 1650 miles to next service before I messed with it. I mentioned the lack of menu option to check the oil level and they said they would take a look.

When I said "nor sure if it's the same on all models" I meant all W203's (and similar)!!

I know it's easy to reset ASSYST (I've done it - the dealer was most bemused that I took my car in for service when it showed 13,000 miles to go!) but can't imagine how you got it to read 10K overdue though.

Simple answer to that is that I then went back in and cancelled the service. I appear to have done that twice so it cancelled the previous service as well. D'oh +1

I know someone who got rid of the car due to the erroneous readings

LMAO  I think there is a reason there is an engineering mode, to stop Muppet's playing silly buggers with it...
I did note that mine is set for the 15.5K servicing I could even put on extras to the service from the menu. Not that the dealers would do anything like that..

Still no further ahead on actually measuring the amount of oil in said motor though :-(

A well known member here with his 220 the oil start reading in quarts add a quart when the car had just been serviced, then it would never go away, even though the level was correct, the South coast dealer could not resolve it so he sold it

Call me old fashioned, but there's something to be said for a good old dipstick.

I've had mine (only) 9 months and 9,000 miles and according to the menu it's never required topping up. I'm surprised at this from a diesel. I was expecting to have topped up by now.

Still, it must be a good sign that the engine doesn't use that much oil.

I could call you old fashioned but you'd need to do the same with me.

Why is it that a simple task of checking oil levels... AT & Engine is being made more complicated as time goes by?

No AT dipstick for Auto models and now no engine oil dipstick ... "all you need to do is simply scroll through half a dozen menus sir"

Pretty soon they will remove the fuel gauge and just give you a message on the dash when the tank is getting low...

"Please add 40 litres of 98 octane to the fuel tank filler tube which is located to the rear nearside of your car". :D

Thanks, I did find the dipstick and it isn't just the one behind the wheel! Having had a W210 previously the tube with the red cap on was the sealed gearbox dipstick tube, on this car it is a engine oil dipstick.
I'm sat in my dealer using their free wireless whilst my car is being serviced and discussed the dipstick location with the service manager. He said it was the ATF tube previously with the red cap on and just rolled his eyes at the decision by MB to disguise the dipstick.
