Folks,

Only me again!

My W203 220 CDI was dead as a door nail. Not revving above 3000rpm etc etc.

Today i bought a new MAF and as soon as i put it in the 3000rpm limit was gone!!!....Woo HOO!!!!

Ten seconds later it was just as bad as ever!

I unplugged the MAF, replugged it and it sprung into life again!...for another few seconds. Ive repeated this a few times and its always the same....all power then nothing after a few seconds, cured by unplugging and replugging the MAF. Every time its the same!!!!!!

Anyone got any ideas as to what my next step is?...i cant afford to be buying bits i might not need!!!!

More than likely a split intercooler hose (I would check that first by listening for an air rushing sound from the engine when revving it up), is there any black smoke from the exhaust?

I would have agreed with H/M, but now i am wondering if its the sticky wastegate fault, you need the fault codes read to see if you have a fault code of charge pressure sensor stored, if so, then a new turbo is needed!!

Yes, that old chestnut the jammed turbo wastegate! Needs some proper testing with Star Diagnosis to be safe....

Its the cheapest way at the end of the day, we are all just guessing, just rings a bell the way he explains the fault!!!

I had the same problem with a 220cdi engine on a Vito traveliner( same engine as yours) and it turned out to be the Boost control unit and is cheap and easy to replace .

Smart + others :)
check the cats out, top one looses its packing and blocks the rear cat :(. Top one will rattle if removed and the rear one will be full of tiny bits. but a diagnoses will help trace 1st

Hi Guys,

I "de-catted" the exhaust about a year ago after they got badly blocked. The car was a bit louder, you could hear the turbo a bit more, but all was well!!!!

I've disconnected and reconnected the MAF again, and it'll rev like billy-o for a couple of seconds, then drop to 3000rpm again. I cant hear any air escaping, so i dont think i've got a leaking/split hose. When i had a diagnostic unit plugged in on monday, the only fault that wouldnt clear was the "inlet shutoff motor". I know the inlet manifold is full of gunge since i pulled the EGR valve out and it was full of crap. I'll pull the manifold out over then weekend and give it a clean...still havent figured out where the tarry stuffs coming from.

The plot thickens.....but hopefully theres light at the end of the tunnel!

the tarry stuff is very common on most diesel engines.it is mainly in inlet manifold and egr vavle.also pipes linking the two together, its a bugger to remove unless you can strip out completely.
